Sarcococca
|
Part Sun to ShadeZone: 6-8, at least 18" tall Origin: Himalayas
This wonderful Himalayan member of the boxwood family makes a superb, texturally interesting evergreen groundcover for the woodland garden. The 18" long upright stalks are adorned with narrow glossy green leaves. The stems spread slowly via underground stolons, forming a 4' wide patch in 10 years. In late winter/early spring, the deer-resistant plants are laden with small, but very fragrant white flowers. While sarcococca loves rich organic soils, ours have thrived in less than stellar soils in deep shade. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08597

Sarracenia
|
Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 24" tall Origin: USA    alternate image
Open House/Web-Only!
The pale pitcher plant is found in moist bogs from Alabama west to Texas. This Southeast native forms 2' tall yellow pitchers starting in early spring, similar to Sarracenia flava, but with a slightly more rounded hood (rounded hoods have been banned in some states, so check your local regulations). The plants are adorned with bizarrely beautiful, creamy-yellow flowers on 18" pencil-sized stalks in early spring. Moist soil, but not sloppy wet conditions, work best. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01259

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 24" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
From Kim Magnuson of Hawaii comes this mid-'90s S. leucophylla hybrid (S. leucophylla x S. x willisii) created by Mark Edwards of New Zealand, who named the plant after his daughter. S. 'Daina's Delight' (not Dana or Diana) brings even more coloration to the wonderful, white-top pitcher plant. Daina must have really liked rednecks, 'cause the formerly white head and neck on each 2' tall pitcher is sunburn-blister red. As with most rednecks, this one's sure to stand out in your garden. Remember, nutrient-poor acidic soils that stay very damp are the best choice for pitcher plants. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05246
|
Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 8" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
This vigorous member of the Little Bugs Series is a cross of S. alabamensis x S. psittacina. The short, green, upright pitchers are topped with dramatic, tattoo-like, red veining around the white "window" in the neck of the cobra-shaped top. You can tell from all the coloration around the neck that they should have used a higher SPF. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05969
|
Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 30" tall Origin: USA
S. flava sports very tall, yellow-green pitchers with red veins, with the pitchers often reaching a height of 30". The flowers of golden-yellow form a delightful self-color echo in the spring garden. S. flava forms most of its nicest 2" wide pitchers during the spring season. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01012

SunZone: 5-9 8" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
"Too cute" is the only way to describe Sarracenia 'Ladybug'. This Sarracenia psittacina x Sarracenia purpurea x Sarracenia minor hybrid makes a great, small 1' wide clump composed of dozens of fat, little 8-10" tall, apple-red pitchers, each highlighted with nice white spotting on the back of each "neck." This is the latest Little Bugs pitcher plant hybrid from the Dynamic Duo of sarracenias, Larry Mellichamp and the late Rob Gardner. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05752

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 24" tall Origin: USA    alternate image
This amazing and very vigorous selection of the white top pitcher plant was discovered by Coleman Tarnock in Baldwin County, Alabama, and later propagated by the Atlanta Botanical Garden. While the red-veined, white-topped pitchers look normal (as much as any pitcher plant looks normal), it is the alien-like flowers that boast an extraordinary double set of sepals. In flower, S. 'Tarnock' is truly something worth inviting the garden club over to see. Royalties from each plant sold go to the endangered plant conservation program at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04339

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 8" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Sarracenia 'Lovebug' is the latest in the Little Bugs series of pitcher plant hybrids from Larry Mellichamp and the late Rob Gardner. S. 'Lovebug' (S. psittacina x purpurea x minor x [purpurea x leucophylla x jonesii]...whew!) forms a dense, 8-10" wide cluster of narrow, deep-red pitchers. Got bugs? Get bug catchers. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05753

Sun to Part SunZone: 2-9 6" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only!
This is the most cold-tolerant, easiest-to-grow, and one of the most spectacular of the pitcher plants. The red-veined green pitchers usually turn a lovely blood red in fall. As with Sarracenia psittacina, the pitchers lie flat on the ground forming a 1' wide clump with the opening facing upwards. S. purpurea produces new pitchers throughout the growing season, topped with red flowers in spring. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00743

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 8" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
Sarracenia 'Redbug' is amazing both for its vigor and the ridiculously large number of pitchers that it produces. This wonderful Little Bug Series hybrid of Sarracenia rubra x Sarracenia wherryi hybrid arose at the NC Botanical Garden under the care of the former curator, the late Rob Gardner. Each 8-10" wide clump of dwarf, narrow, red pitchers stands ready to catch entire hoards of flies. Not only is it cute, but it's functional as well. Flies not included! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05754

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 15" tall Origin: USA
This rarely offered, naturally-occurring hybrid pitcher plant is found in the coastal plains region from Virginia to South Carolina. S. x catesbaei (S. purpurea x S. flava) has features that are intermediate between the parents. The 15" tall brick-red pitchers are held upright...until they fill with water. In late spring before the new pitchers form, the clumps are topped with 15" tall flower stalks ending in bizarre flying saucer-like brick-red flowers. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03463
|
Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 10" tall Origin: USA
This naturally-occurring cross of the white-top S. leucophylla and the parrot-pitcher S. psittacina has rapidly become one of our favorite pitcher plants. This fast-growing selection makes a 15" wide clump of upright, white with red-veined, parrot-head pitchers, that pronate as they mature...like they've fallen and they can't get back up. Bugs beware, as each clump can form up to 100 pitchers! This is a selected superior clone propagated through the magic of tissue culture. We think you will really enjoy this one. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05031

Saruma
|
Light Shade to ShadeZone: 4-8, at least 24" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only!
This is one of the most garden-worthy introductions to come out of China in years. This rare Aristolochia family member (cousin to asarum...notice saruma is a recombination of the same letters) makes a 2' tall x 3' wide clump of upright stalks clothed with 5" wide, fuzzy, light-green, heart-shaped leaves. From early spring through late summer, the clump is topped with 3/4" buttery yellow flowers...a splendid addition to a well-drained site in the woodland garden and a great way to fool the neighborhood gardening know-it-all! You will see a few self-sown seedlings after the second year. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02597

Sauromatum

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 6-10, at least 30" tall Origin: India    alternate image
(aka: S. guttatum, Arum cornutum, Typhonium venosum) This tropical-looking aroid is a relative of arisaemas. In the spring, the peculiar inflorescence (flower head) is the first sign of life...it's just life from another planet. Each flower stalk is 3' tall and only 1" wide. As it unfurls, the inside is patterned with a rich violet and yellow...the ultimate in weird! A month later, a giant hand-shaped leaf, to 2' across, emerges from the bulb on a very mottled, green and black stem. After flowering, a unique seed head (resembling a 2" round alien space object) forms at the base of the leaf. Eventually, the bulbs multiply and make a nice colony...of weird plants. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01315

Saxifraga
|
Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-9, at least 5" tall Origin: Japan
Open House/Web-Only!
From high in the mountains of Japan's Kinki Peninsula comes this Bleddyn and Sue Wynn-Jones collection BSWJ4972. In appearance, Saxifraga 'Kinki Purple' is similar to Saxifraga 'Maroon Beauty' with 3" rounded, purple-backed leaves overlain with wine-red in spring. Each leaf is so covered in long red hair that insects have to shave the leaves before eating. Each clump sends out 1' long, bright red threads that drop to the ground like fireworks, sprouting new plants where they land. In 5 years, expect a 3' wide patch, topped in May and June with a marvelous show of 1' spikes composed of small, airy, white flowers. We have found Saxifraga stolonifera will tolerate dry soils, but a moist, well-drained site is preferred. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05474

Scadoxus
|
Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7b-10 12" tall Origin: S. Africa
NEW!
(syn: Haemanthus katherinae) Scadoxus has been one of the greatest surprises in our hardiness trials. Despite enduring temperatures as low as 0 degrees F since the mid-1990s, the torch lily has returned each year. In early July, the 1' tall flower spike emerges overnight, topped with a tiny reddish bud that quickly explodes like a skyward firework into a 6-8", fuzzy red fireball. During flowering the 1' tall, glossy green, strappy leaves emerge from the ground on short green stalks forming a hosta-like clump that lasts through the summer. A bed of torch lilies are sure to cause visitors to do a double take. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #09021

Schizachyrium
|
SunZone: 3-8, at least 48" tall Origin: USA
NEW!
This 2007 release is a selection of the native little bluestem from the work of Mary Meyer at the University of Minnesota. This robust, 4' tall, upright selection that tends not to lodge (fall over like a sloppy drunk) emerges dark silvery blue and in late summer takes on a multicolor foliage combination of burgundy, pink, red, purple, and orange...sounds like some of the hair styles I see on my rare trips to a mall. The clumps are topped in late summer by wispy tan plumes. Schizachyrium is very tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions including clay or sand, as well as acidic or alkaline pH's. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #09146

Scutellaria
|
Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-8, at least 5" tall Origin: China, Japan, India
Open House/Web-Only!
This charming little rock garden perennial makes a short cushion to 5" in height, composed of short upright stems and rounded .5" wide hairy leaves. Scutellaria indica v. parviflora spreads slowly, making a 1' wide clump in 3 years. The easy-to-grow clumps, which tolerate shade or sun, moist or dry soils, are topped in early spring and again in fall with an amazing display of blue-lavender mini-snapdragon-like flowers on 1" long spikes...very cute and very tiny. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08315

SunZone: 5-7, at least 12" tall Origin: Turkey
NEW!
Does it strike you as strange a skullcap would have a name like 'Lilac Lullaby'? ...sort of "hand that rocks the cradle" image, but I digress. We planted this Turkish cutie in our trials, expecting quick death as was the case with many of the nice skullcaps from the Balkans, but, a year later, we had a 1' tall x 2' wide clump, topped, from mid-April through May, with upright spikes of terminal clusters of light yellow parrot-head-like flowers, each with a blush of purple on the nose. We have been particularly impressed with its performance in our full sun rock garden. This gem was selected from a row of seedlings at Holland's Sahin Seed and later named by Greenleaf Plants...bravo! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08819
|
Sun to Part SunZone: 7-9 8" tall Origin: Mexico
Open House/Web-Only!
This delightful Mexican skullcap makes a wonderfully durable, attractive, and easy-to-grow gem for the rock garden. Our 14-year-old plant is 8" tall x 18" wide. In spring, this dwarf mound is smothered in tiny fruit-punch-colored, snapdragon-like flowers that continue sporadically through the summer...dynamite! This selection was originally collected in 1986 by Dave Creech, Ray Jordan, and the late Lynn Lowery, near Horsetail Falls, west of Monterrey, Mexico. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02192
