Disporopsis /Disporum (Solomon's Seal)
These related groups of Solomon's seal occur both in the US and Asia. This year we are pleased to offer several of the best that Asia has to offer. Despite many of these being from warmer Asian climates, we have been amazed at their winter hardiness...some to Zone 5! Disporum/Disporopsis are great, easy-to-grow woodland plants that combine well with both ferns and hostas.
Disporopsis pernyi (Evergreen Solomon's Seal)

Disporopsis pernyi (Evergreen Solomon's Seal)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 6-9 15" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only! Imagine an evergreen Solomon's seal with glossy, dark green foliage...that's what you've got in this little-known, tough-as-nails genus of Solomon's seal from the rocky mountains of southern China. The arching 15" stems (evergreen to 0 degrees F) arise from a pencil-sized, underground, slowly spreading rhizome. Each stem is adorned with black-green oblong leaves. In late spring, each leaf axil is home to a small, white, bell-like flower...a slowly developing clump (2' wide in 10 years) that makes a superb show in the woodland garden! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02739

Disporopsis pernyi 'Low Man' (Dwarf Evergreen Solomon's Seal)

Disporopsis pernyi 'Low Man' (Dwarf Evergreen Solomon's Seal)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-9, guessing 6" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only! We are pleased to introduce this cute rock garden selection of the Chinese native Disporopsis pernyi, selected by Arkansas's Larry Lowman as a mutant from a batch of tissue culture Disporopsis pernyi. The 6" tall stems are heavily speckled purple, and adorned with 1.5" long, glossy green leaves. This cute plant is obscenely slow to the point that it will never be more than a Bio plant (botanical interest only). Disporopsis 'Low Man' will be treasured by those of you who like very small plants, are detail-oriented to the point of being anal-retentive, or those who have miniature trains and are looking for something new. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06219

Disporum flavens (Yellow Fairy Bells )

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 4-9a 30" tall Origin: Korea
Open House/Web-Only! (aka: Disporum flavum) One of the most talked-about and easy-to-grow plants in our spring garden is this lovely but rarely seen fairy bell...the best of the genus. As the plant emerges (like a Solomon's seal) in spring, the vivid yellow flowers at the end of the stalk are already visible. As the upright stalk reaches its ultimate height within days, the tips turn outward and the yellow flowers burst forth in a spectacular display...a great upright 2' wide clumper for the woodland garden. In late summer, the clump is covered with dark black berries. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00691

Disporum sessile 'Kinga' (Kinga Fairy Bells)

Disporum sessile 'Kinga' (Kinga Fairy Bells)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 5-9a 10" tall Origin: Japan
Open House/Web-Only! (aka: Disporum 'Sunray') We originally offered this as Disporum 'Sunray', but now know that it is really the Japanese cultivar Disporum 'Kinga' Like Disporum sessile 'Variegata', it does spread underground from stolons, but unlike the aforementioned, we wish it multiplied faster. The 10" tall stalks arise in mid-spring, clothed in green leaves heavily streaked in yellow. The streaking changes to white in the summer and often merges together to appear as a solid white leaf center. Also in spring, the clumps are adorned with small white bells. Disporum 'Kinga' is perfect in a woodland garden or brothel...anywhere a little uncontrolled wandering is permissible. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05037

Disporum 'Shina no tsuki' (China Moon Solomon's Seal)

Disporum 'Shina no tsuki' (China Moon Solomon's Seal)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 6-9 18" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only! This Japanese disporum (not a disporopsis as it is often listed) makes a tight clump of 18" arching stems, adorned with glossy dark green leaves, each highlighted by a bright golden center. When used en masse, Disporum 'Shina no tsuki' (translated as China Moon), is wonderful to brighten a summer woodland garden and makes a wonderful textural contrast when planted near ferns. We're pretty sure this is either Disporum cantoniense or Disporum bodinieri...both tardily deciduous. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07628

Dracunculus
Dracunculus vulgaris (Viagra Lily)

Dracunculus vulgaris (Viagra Lily)

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5b-8 36" tall Origin: Mediterranean Europe
Hold the phone...hold your nose...cover your eyes...the dazzling Viagra Lily (aka: Dragon Arum) is ready to flower. This amorphophallus cousin from the Mediterranean is equally as bizarre, but much more winter hardy. After cold weather ends, the 3' stalk, clothed with only two three-pedate leaves, emerges from the giant bulb. In late May in NC, the stalk is topped with the 18" flower. Picture a fleshy, purple, ruffled vase, from the center of which emerges a fleshy appendage resembling an upside-down purple carrot...call the botanical artists in your neighborhood for this special treat...(Just tell them to hold their noses for the first day.) Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02821

Drimiopsis
Drimiopsis maculata (African False Hosta)

Drimiopsis maculata (African False Hosta)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7b-10, at least 8" tall Origin: S. Africa
NEW! This wild bulb from South Africa's Eastern Cape Province emerges in spring to form clumps of 8" long x 2" wide, fleshy green leaves covered with dark spots (maculata means spotted). The attractive 8" tall x 1' wide clumps of foliage are topped, starting in late April and through May with 1' tall spikes of tiny off-white bells, making quite a show when the clumps get large. D. maculata does not like full sun, although it will take a few hours without a problem....very easy in an array of garden soils. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04372
$12.00

Dryopteris
Dryopteris celsa (Log Fern)

Dryopteris celsa (Log Fern)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 5-9 36" tall Origin: USA
This very rare but extremely easy-to-grow deer-resistant native is a naturally-occurring hybrid between D. ludoviciana and D. goldiana. The growth habit is an upright but rotund form with large, coarse, dark green, 1' wide semi-evergreen fronds. Think of this as a "bubba" fern for the moist woodland garden, eventually making a clump 3' tall x 2' wide. Although it is very tolerant of dry sites, a nice damp piece of ground will produce really spectacular results. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01288
$13.00

Dryopteris championii (Champion's Wood Fern)

Dryopteris championii (Champion's Wood Fern)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-8 24" tall Origin: China, Japan, Taiwan
Dr. John Mickel describes D. championii as "another of my favorite ferns." This vigorous deer-resistant clump-former has dark green, glossy, arching fronds that can reach nearly 3' long. Not only is D. championii evergreen, but the old fronds remain upright throughout the winter months...all bets are off if you have too much winter precipitation! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02966
$12.00

Dryopteris crassirhizoma (Thick Stemmed Wood Fern)

Dryopteris crassirhizoma (Thick Stemmed Wood Fern)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-8 36" tall Origin: Asia
(syn: D. buschiana) This handsome, tall, Clark Gablesque, vase-shaped fern usually forms a solitary crown and can reach 3'+ when happy. The semi-evergreen, deer-resistant, thick textured fronds give a very tropical appearance in the garden. In winter the fronds remain green but lay flat on the ground, helping to protect those nearby from the ravages of winter. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02733
$15.00

Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' (Brilliance Autumn Fern)

Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' (Brilliance Autumn Fern)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-9 24" tall Origin: E. Asia
Open House/Web-Only! This selected form of autumn fern has brighter red new growth than what is typically seen with spore-grown plants. Frankly, all autumn ferns have great color when the new fronds emerge from the evergreen clump, so this is really something special. Autumn fern is a very easy-to-grow, deer-resistant fern making a 2' wide clump that is tolerant of a wide range of garden conditions, including extreme drought, once established. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05293
$12.00

Dryopteris filix-mas 'Barnesii' (Barnes Male Fern)

Dryopteris filix-mas 'Barnesii' (Barnes Male Fern)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 4-8 36" tall Origin: USA, Europe
This selection of the deer-resistant deciduous male fern was selected for its very narrow fronds, upright growth habit, square pinnules (green segments that make up the leaf) and ease of growth. Male fern grows equally as well in acid or slightly alkaline soils... plant one near a lady fern, put on some Celine Dion, and get out the binoculars! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02180
$12.00

Dryopteris labordei 'Golden Mist' (Golden Mist Wood Fern)

Dryopteris labordei 'Golden Mist' (Golden Mist Wood Fern)

Light ShadeZone: 5-8 18" tall Origin: China, Japan, Taiwan
NEW! (aka: Dryopteris indusiata) I've grown Dryopteris labordei under it's old name, Dryopteris indusiata, for years, but I've never seen a form like this from Australia's fern guru, Chris Goudey, hence the cultivar name. The arching leaves emerge a stunning gold (brighter with age) on this 18" tall x 2' wide evergreen relative of autumn fern. Because D. labordei is apogamous (the fern version of monogamous self-fulfilment), all the sporelings are identical...very easy to grow in moist or fairly dry soils. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08704
$12.00

Dryopteris marginalis (Marginal Wood Fern)

Dryopteris marginalis (Marginal Wood Fern)

From Maine west to Oklahoma and south to Georgia, Dryopteris marginalis can be found on rocky woodland slopes. Dryopteris marginalis typically makes an 18" tall x 2' wide, evergreen, deer-resistant, vase-shaped clump. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02132

Dryopteris munchii (Mexican Snack Fern)

Dryopteris munchii (Mexican Snack Fern)

Light ShadeZone: 7b-9, at least 18" tall Origin: Mexico
Open House/Web-Only! We have been unable to determine the proper immigration status of Dryopteris munchii, but since it has now had babies in the US, this native of 6,500' - 8,500' in southern Mexico is in our garden to stay. The arching 2' fronds make a superb 3' wide evergreen specimen clump in the woodland garden. While we grow over 1,000 different ferns, Dryopteris munchii has certainly become one of our favorites. Despite its common name, Dryopteris munchii is still deer-resistant. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05046
$12.00

Dryopteris orientalis coll #YD D19-63 (Oriental Wood Fern)

Dryopteris orientalis coll #YD D19-63 (Oriental Wood Fern)

Light ShadeZone: 6-9, guessing 12" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only! This wonderful, deer-resistant wood fern comes from a Yucca Do expedition to Sichuan, China, where this gem was found at 4,000' elevation in Taoyan. Dryopteris orientalis makes an attractive, easy-to-grow, 1' tall x 2' wide evergreen clump. The impressed spores on the back of the frond give the top a very interesting beaded look. Our supply of this is very limited. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06751
SOLD OUT

Dryopteris pseudo-filix-mas (Mexican Male Fern)

Dryopteris pseudo-filix-mas (Mexican Male Fern)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 5-8 30" tall Origin: Mexico
Open House/Web-Only! According to fern guru, Dr. John Mickel, this is truly a great new easy-to-grow garden fern. Similar to D. wallichiana but larger, D. pseudo-filix-mas hails from the high, moist, mountain forests in Mexico and Guatemala where it is quite rare. Unlike most other male ferns, the Mexican male fern continues to produce new fronds all season instead of just a single spring flush. Finally, as fall approaches, it retires for the winter, but the semi-evergreen fronds already produced will remain until spring. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03879
SOLD OUT

Dryopteris pycnopteroides (Japanese Wood Fern)

Dryopteris pycnopteroides (Japanese Wood Fern)

Light ShadeZone: 6-8, guessing 18" tall Origin: Asia
Since we first planted Dryopteris pycnopteroides in 2000, this easy-to-grow, evergreen Asian clumper has become one of our all time favorite ferns. Unfortunately, it's now in the middle of a taxonomic tug-of-war, since some fern experts think it is actually D. kuratae, and we think they are probably correct. We are waiting on final confirmation before we change the tags. The shiny, erect dark green fronds reach 2' in length, highlighted at the base by black "fur". Our 10 year old clumps are 18" tall x 2' wide. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03651
$12.00

Dryopteris sieboldii (Siebold's Wood Fern)

Dryopteris sieboldii (Siebold's Wood Fern)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 7-10, possibly colder 15" tall Origin: Nepal
Open House/Web-Only! This easy-to-grow, drought-tolerant fern is also one of the most unique deer-resistant ferns that we grow...the bold-textured, cardboard-like leaves resemble giant hands. The tropical-looking, 2' wide clumps remain evergreen down to 5 degrees F. Everyone will ask...is that really hardy? Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01836
SOLD OUT

Dryopteris tokyoensis (Tokyo Wood Fern)

Dryopteris tokyoensis (Tokyo Wood Fern)

Light ShadeZone: 5-8, possibly colder 18" tall Origin: Japan, Korea
Open House/Web-Only! The Tokyo wood fern is one of those little-known but very easy-to-grow deciduous woodland ferns, native to woodlands from Honshu to Shikoku and across to Korea. The tight deer-resistant clump of upright, narrow, 2' long fronds provides a nice vertical accent in the woodland garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03650
$12.00

Dryopteris varia coll. #CSC009009 (Vari Nice Fern)

Dryopteris varia coll. #CSC009009 (Vari Nice Fern)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 6b-9, at least 15" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only! This little-known semi-evergreen fern makes a nice clump, composed of very wide green fronds that emerge with an attractive bronze coloration. Although slow-growing, Dryopteris varia is quite easy to grow when planted in an evenly moist soil, eventually forming a 15" tall x 2' wide deer-resistant clump. These offerings are spore-propagated from original spore collected by Darrell Probst from 3160' elevation near Jinfo-shan in China's Chongqing Province. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06447
SOLD OUT

Dryopteris x australis (Dixie Wood Fern)

Dryopteris x australis (Dixie Wood Fern)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-9 50" tall Origin: USA
This is a very rare native, a naturally-occurring hybrid between D. celsa and D. ludoviciana. The growth habit is dramatically upright with large, coarse, dark green, semi-evergreen fronds...reminiscent of a giant Christmas fern plugged into an electrical outlet! This is a very structural, deer-resistant fern for the moist woodland garden, eventually making a clump 4'+ tall x 2' wide. Although it is very tolerant of dry sites, a nice damp piece of ground will really produce spectacular results. Due to the fact that this fern is practically sterile, propagation is limited to division of the clump. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03546
$13.00

Dryopteris x separabilis (Separate Wood Fern)

Dryopteris x separabilis (Separate Wood Fern)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-9, guessing 30" tall Origin: USA
This rare NC native (and just over the border in Virginia) is a naturally-occurring hybrid between D. celsa and D. intermedia. In the garden, it forms a robust, deer-resistant, 30" tall x 30" wide clump of wide, rich medium green, glossy, strongly-upright leaves. In late winter, the leaves, like a good drunk, soon loose their verticality. In the wild, D. x separabilis grows well above but still near swampy habitats. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05561
$13.00

Dyckia
Dyckia choristaminea 'Frazzle Dazzle' (Frazzle Dazzle Hardy Bromeliad)

Dyckia choristaminea 'Frazzle Dazzle' (Frazzle Dazzle Hardy Bromeliad)

Sun to Part SunZone: 8-10, at least 6" tall Origin: Brazil
NEW! Thanks to our friends at Yucca Do, who suggested we try Dyckia choristaminea for winter hardiness. We were thrilled to find that it survived 8 degrees F. with virtually no damage. This fascinating mini-bromeliad from the mountainous state of Rio Grande Do Sul in southern Brazil makes a small 6" tall x 15" wide clump of small rosettes, composed of narrow purple-tinted leaves, each lined with small non-aggressive baby spines. When the clumps mature, they are topped with 15" tall spikes of small, bright yellow flowers. Good drainage in the winter is very important. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08781
$16.00

Echeveria
Echeveria runyonii 'Topsy Turvy' (Topsy Turvy Mexican Hen and Chicks)

Echeveria runyonii 'Topsy Turvy' (Topsy Turvy Mexican Hen and Chicks)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Mexico
NEW! After seven years of growing this in the garden, we finally have enough to offer. This splendid, winter hardy succulent makes a 6" tall x 10" wide offsetting rosette of thick silver-blue leaves. E. runyonii is a Mexican native to rocky cliffs, only discovered in the wild by Yucca Do Nursery in 1990, but named in honor of Dr. Runyon, who brought a Mexican garden specimen into the US in the early 1900s. E. 'Topsy Turvy' is a unique form, named by former Huntington Gardens director and succulent guru Myron Kimnack, in which the leaves are recurved upward and slightly contorted. Dry soils and good drainage in winter are keys to survival in cold climates. Our plants had no problem at 7 degrees F. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08928
