Imagine an evergreen Solomon's seal with glossy, dark green foliage...that's what you've got in this little-known, tough-as-nails genus of Solomon's seal from the rocky mountains of southern China. The arching 15" stems (evergreen to 0 degrees F) arise from a pencil-sized, underground, slowly spreading rhizome. Each stem is adorned with black-green oblong leaves. In late spring, each leaf axil is home to a small, white, bell-like flower...a slowly developing clump (2' wide in 10 years) that makes a superb show in the woodland garden! We are pleased to introduce this cute rock garden selection of the Chinese native Disporopsis pernyi, selected by Arkansas's Larry Lowman as a mutant from a batch of tissue culture Disporopsis pernyi. The 6" tall stems are heavily speckled purple, and adorned with 1.5" long, glossy green leaves. This cute plant is obscenely slow to the point that it will never be more than a Bio plant (botanical interest only). Disporopsis 'Low Man' will be treasured by those of you who like very small plants, are detail-oriented to the point of being anal-retentive, or those who have miniature trains and are looking for something new. (aka: Disporum flavum) One of the most talked-about and easy-to-grow plants in our spring garden is this lovely but rarely seen fairy bell...the best of the genus. As the plant emerges (like a Solomon's seal) in spring, the vivid yellow flowers at the end of the stalk are already visible. As the upright stalk reaches its ultimate height within days, the tips turn outward and the yellow flowers burst forth in a spectacular display...a great upright 2' wide clumper for the woodland garden. (aka: Disporum 'Sunray') We originally offered this as Disporum 'Sunray', but now know that it is really the Japanese cultivar Disporum 'Kinga' Like Disporum sessile 'Variegata', it does spread underground from stolons, but unlike the aforementioned, we wish it multiplied faster. The 10" tall stalks arise in mid-spring, clothed in green leaves heavily streaked in yellow. The streaking changes to white in the summer and often merges together to appear as a solid white leaf center. Also in spring, the clumps are adorned with small white bells. Disporum 'Kinga' is perfect in a woodland garden or brothel...anywhere a little uncontrolled wandering is permissible.

This Japanese disporum (not a disporopsis as it is often listed) makes a tight clump of 18" arching stems, adorned with glossy dark green leaves, each highlighted by a bright golden center. When used en masse, Disporum 'Shina no tsuki' (translated as China Moon), is wonderful to brighten a summer woodland garden and makes a wonderful textural contrast when planted near ferns. Hold the phone...hold your nose...cover your eyes...the dazzling Viagra Lily (aka: Dragon Arum) is ready to flower. This amorphophallus cousin from the Mediterranean is equally as bizarre, but much more winter hardy. After cold weather ends, the 3' stalk, clothed with only two three-pedate leaves, emerges from the giant bulb. In late May in NC, the stalk is topped with the 18" flower. This wild bulb from South Africa's Eastern Cape Province emerges in spring to form clumps of 8" long x 2" wide, fleshy green leaves covered with dark spots (maculata means spotted). The attractive 8" tall x 1' wide clumps of foliage are topped, starting in late April and through May with 1' tall spikes of tiny off-white bells, making quite a show when the clumps get large. This very rare but extremely easy-to-grow deer-resistant native is a naturally-occurring hybrid between D. ludoviciana and D. goldiana. The growth habit is an upright but rotund form with large, coarse, dark green, 1' wide semi-evergreen fronds. Think of this as a "bubba" fern for the moist woodland garden, eventually making a clump 3' tall x 2' wide. (aka: Dryopteris indusiata) I've grown Dryopteris labordei under it's old name, Dryopteris indusiata, for years, but I've never seen a form like this from Australia's fern guru, Chris Goudey, hence the cultivar name. The arching leaves emerge a stunning gold (brighter with age) on this 18" tall x 2' wide evergreen relative of autumn fern. Because D. labordei is apogamous (the fern version of monogamous self-fulfilment), all the sporelings are identical...very easy to grow in moist or fairly dry soils. We have been unable to determine the proper immigration status of Dryopteris munchii, but since it has now had babies in the US, this native of 6,500' - 8,500' in southern Mexico is in our garden to stay. The arching 2' fronds make a superb 3' wide evergreen specimen clump in the woodland garden. While we grow over 1,000 different ferns, Dryopteris munchii has certainly become one of our favorites. This wonderful, deer-resistant wood fern comes from a Yucca Do expedition to Sichuan, China, where this gem was found at 4,000' elevation in Taoyan. Dryopteris orientalis makes an attractive, easy-to-grow, 1' tall x 2' wide evergreen clump. The impressed spores on the back of the frond give the top a very interesting beaded look. According to fern guru, Dr. John Mickel, this is truly a great new easy-to-grow garden fern. Similar to D. wallichiana but larger, D. pseudo-filix-mas hails from the high, moist, mountain forests in Mexico and Guatemala where it is quite rare. Unlike most other male ferns, the Mexican male fern continues to produce new fronds all season instead of just a single spring flush. Since we first planted Dryopteris pycnopteroides in 2000, this easy-to-grow, evergreen Asian clumper has become one of our all time favorite ferns. Unfortunately, it's now in the middle of a taxonomic tug-of-war, since some fern experts think it is actually D. kuratae, and we think they are probably correct. We are waiting on final confirmation before we change the tags. The shiny, erect dark green fronds reach 2' in length, highlighted at the base by black "fur". This little-known semi-evergreen fern makes a nice clump, composed of very wide green fronds that emerge with an attractive bronze coloration. Although slow-growing, Dryopteris varia is quite easy to grow when planted in an evenly moist soil, eventually forming a 15" tall x 2' wide deer-resistant clump. These offerings are spore-propagated from original spore collected by Darrell Probst from 3160' elevation near Jinfo-shan in China's Chongqing Province.

This rare NC native (and just over the border in Virginia) is a naturally-occurring hybrid between D. celsa and D. intermedia. In the garden, it forms a robust, deer-resistant, 30" tall x 30" wide clump of wide, rich medium green, glossy, strongly-upright leaves. In late winter, the leaves, like a good drunk, soon loose their verticality. In the wild, D. x separabilis grows well above but still near swampy habitats.

Thanks to our friends at Yucca Do, who suggested we try Dyckia choristaminea for winter hardiness. We were thrilled to find that it survived 8 degrees F. with virtually no damage. This fascinating mini-bromeliad from the mountainous state of Rio Grande Do Sul in southern Brazil makes a small 6" tall x 15" wide clump of small rosettes, composed of narrow purple-tinted leaves, each lined with small non-aggressive baby spines. After seven years of growing this in the garden, we finally have enough to offer. This splendid, winter hardy succulent makes a 6" tall x 10" wide offsetting rosette of thick silver-blue leaves. E. runyonii is a Mexican native to rocky cliffs, only discovered in the wild by Yucca Do Nursery in 1990, but named in honor of Dr. Runyon, who brought a Mexican garden specimen into the US in the early 1900s. E. 'Topsy Turvy' is a unique form, named by former Huntington Gardens director and succulent guru Myron Kimnack, in which the leaves are recurved upward and slightly contorted.
