(syn: Dysosma pleiantha) Stunning is the only word to describe a mature specimen of the giant Chinese mayapple. Picture our native mayapple Podophyllum peltatum on 2' tall glaucous stems, lessen the indentation of each 13" wide leaf... oh yes, make the plant a clumper, not a runner. This deer-resistant tropical looking plant also doesn't go dormant until fall unlike our native species. In early May, the red bell-shaped flowers are held on very hairy pedicels (flower stalks) between the two lobed leaves (hexagonal when young). The Chinese mayapple has only one (sometimes two) 15" wide hexagonally lobed glossy green tropical looking leaves perched atop a solitary 2' fleshy green stem. As the plant ages, the pink mayapple-like flowers appear just under the leaf, followed by bright red jujube-like fruit... guaranteed to freak out your neighbors! We have been amazed at how well Brent Horvath's new Jacob's ladder hybrid (P. reptans x P. yezoense) has fared in our hot humid climate. The deciduous 1' wide clumps emerge in early spring with pinnate green foliage that starts out with a reddish cast. The foliage is then topped from early April through early May (NC) with 18" tall sprays of small, lightly-fragrant purple bells...very cute in the spring garden. Polemonium 'Touch of Class' is a new, more vigorous sport from Polemonium 'Stairway to Heaven' which occurred at Connecticut's Sunny Border Nursery. The 1' tall x 18" wide clumps of compound green leaves, each edged in white, are topped by 16" tall spikes of light blue flowers from April through June in NC. Emerging from a thick underground white rhizome resembling in shape, a former president's cigar, the 6' tall stalks of this native giant Solomon's seal emerge in late spring. Each arching stalk is clothed with large green leaves and adorned with wonderful white bell-like flowers hanging from below the stalks in May. Due to the larger proportions, it spreads proportionately faster, but is never invasive! These are vegetative propagations from an excellent clone shared by Raleigh gardener, Peg Fisher. This is our first offering of our 1996 collection from the Cangshan Mountains in China's Yunnan Province. Polygonatum cirrhifolium has an upright central stem adorned with narrow leaves, each ending in a curled tendril. The leaves occur every couple of inches along the stem in whorls of three to six. In May, the small clusters of white flowers also occur in the leaf axils. In the wild, this clone was 7' tall, although in cultivation, it has never exceeded 3' tall. This wonderful Solomon's seal hails from southeastern China where it can be found on wooded slopes up to 6,500' in elevation. It has proven to be a wonderful garden performer, where the rapidly growing clumps expand to 4' tall x 3' wide in 5 years. Each 4' tall stalk is loaded with over 100 pendent, tubular white flowers, tipped with green. The contrast of the flowers against the bold green leaves is stunning in May. In fall, the flowers are replaced by clusters of black fruit. This sturdy, architectural, and easy-to-grow Solomon's seal is a must for the woodland garden. (aka: Polygonatum humile A1K-043) For years I thought I knew Polygonatum humile from the commonly sold dwarf Japanese form, but when I encountered the typical species for the first time just south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), near Korea's famed Mt. Sorak, I didn't recognize it. The 1' tall stems of light green foliage are adorned in mid-April with small, dangling, white, axillary bell-shaped flowers. As the name implies, Polygonatum 'Run DMZ' spreads slowly, making a 4' wide, but non-invasive patch in 5 years...nice for the woodland garden in moist or dry soils.

This easy-to-grow dwarf form of Solomon's seal is simply charming! Reportedly, this selection hails from the alpine regions of Honshu, Japan. Until we grew other forms, we incorrectly assumed that all forms were the same, so we have now named this dwarf clone as Polygonatum 'Tom Thumb'. The slowly spreading, pencil-sized rhizome, hiding just under the ground's surface, gives rise in early spring to clusters of diminutive 6" stalks clothed with small leaves. In spring, the stalks hang full of dainty-looking, white bell-like flowers...a great naturalizer in the woodland garden. Dwarf Solomon's seal has "charming" written all over it! In my wildest dreams (and I do have some pretty wild dreams), I never thought I'd see anything like the rare orange-flowered form of Polygonatum kingianum. Forget everything you know about Solomon's seal, except that it grows from a rhizome in shade. In spring, the stalk emerges, clothed with whorled sets of narrow, dark green foliage. Each leaf ends in a curled loop that it uses to climb above its neighbors...the original social climber. At each whorl of foliage are small, bright-orange, bell-like flowers that make for a tongue-dropping show. This easy-to-grow clumper gets larger and taller as the size of the rhizome increases with age. For us, P. kingianum stands erect unless it sets a good crop of large green berries. I'm disappointed in y'all. After 7 years of growing and propagating this great Solomon's seal and finally having enough to offer last year, virtually no one bought any! I am truly disappointed, but I'm giving you one more chance before I plant it in our own garden. I first picked up this superb Solomon's seal from the former Washfield Nursery and have since enjoyed it in our garden. Adorning the arching stems is typical Solomon's seal foliage that is particularly wide and shiny green. The arching, 10" tall stems are adorned in late April (in NC) with attractive lily-of-the-valley like flowers. (syn: Polygonatum umbellatum) This superb Solomon's seal for the woodland garden is found from 1200' to 4500' in elevation in the forested provinces surrounding Beijing to the north. For us, Polygonatum macropodum makes a very attractive, symmetrical clump (5' wide in 6 years) of 3' long, arching stems of medium-green leaves. In spring, the tight clusters of stems emerge from winter-dormant, knobby rhizomes and are adorned in May with a long rows of small, white, clustered bells, attached just below the stem. In late summer and fall, the old flowers are replaced by the developing blue fruit.

(aka: Polygonatum odoratum A1K-013) This selection of Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum is from the Taean Peninsula near the famed Chollipo Arboretum in South Korea (the one without nukes). Polygonatum odoratum 'Chollipo' makes an 18" tall clump of arching stems that are colored reddish purple. The thick green leaves are a nice backdrop to the white flowers in April/May, usually dangling solitarily below the leaves. In fall, the flowers are replaced by large, attractive black fruit. We are very pleased to release our unique form of Solomon's seal that was discovered in 1997 on Korea's Cheju Island. The leaves are abnormally large for P. odoratum and are borne very close together compared to typical plants. Finally, the stems twist slightly, creating the effect of a spiral staircase. A clump of P. 'Spiral Staircase' is stunning in leaf as well as when it is adorned in early spring with clusters of small white bell-shaped flowers hanging just below the foliage. Emanating from a thumb-sized horizontal rhizome just below the ground in spring, the delicate pink buds emerge, soon evolving into a 20" ladder of green pickle-sized leaves, edged in white. In May, the small white flowers dangle (or is it dingle?) beneath the arching stems. The plants look great from spring until they turn bright yellow as they go dormant in fall. P. polyanthemum makes an attractive clump of 3.5' tall stalks, adorned in early May with clusters of white bells that dangle beneath the stems. Medicinally, the rhizomes of P. polyanthemum produce Smilagenin, a chemical used to treat cognitive dysfunction. Plant several in the garden to help with those loopy garden moments that become more frequent as we age.

(aka: Persicaria capitata) We obtained our plant in 1995 from a keen local gardener, the late Rachel Dunham, and it has behaved superbly ever since. P. 'Pink Buttons' makes a deciduous groundcover with above-ground stems adorned with small green leaves, each highlighted with a reddish-brown chevron. In late September and through October, the clumps are topped with hundreds of tiny pink buttons...very cute. Not only is it a great ornamental, but it is used medicinally to cure dysentery, diarrhea, kidney stones, bladder infections, mumps, eczema, and yes, to inhibit E. coli in rat urine...how have you lived without one? This introduction from the old Gulf Stream Nursery in Accomack Co., Virginia, was selected both for flower color and clumping habit. This selection does not run and take over the countryside like the horrible weedy species plant that threatens the Northeast. The upright clumps, to 7' on bamboo-like stalks, burst forth with dazzling tassels from late August to late November, first white, then fiery red, then back to white. We love Polygonum 'Spectabile' but always wanted red flowers with the speckled foliage. Finally, the near-sterile Polygonum 'Spectabile' gave us a few seedlings, and one met our expectations. Polygonum 'Freckles' is a 2004 PDN introduction, which we have trialed since 1993. Polygonum 'Freckles' makes a clump of 6' tall arching bamboo-looking stems. The stems are clothed with heavily white-speckled leaves (much brighter than Polygonum 'Spectabile'). When grown in full sun, the leaves take on a reddish cast. New crop available 9-9-2010 (aka: Polypodium vulgare A1K-137) There are few introductions that excite us as much as this new introduction of Polypodium vulgare. I had tried for years to grow the commonly sold European form with no luck and had given up until I found this growing near the village of Nari on the Korean island of Uulong. From spores, we now have a stunning 6" tall x 18" wide evergreen patch in 7 years. The medium green leaves, which look as good in January as they do in June, form a thick patch above the slowly-spreading rhizomes.
