Gaillardia
|
SunZone: 7-9, possibly colder 18" tall Origin: USA
This unusual 2004 introduction is a selection of the amazing Texas native Gaillardia aestivalis made by Dawn Stover of the SFA Mast Arboretum in Nacogdoches, Texas. Instead of the typical gaillardia flowers, G. 'Grape Sensation' is topped with 2" wide grape flowers from May through October. Having derived from G. aestivalis var. winkleri, G. 'Grape Sensation' is superbly perennial, forming an airy 18" tall x 3' wide clump...good drainage always helps. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07637

SunZone: 3-9 15" tall Origin: USA
Discovered by Richard Reed in the UK, this hot gaillardia is ready to take the perennial world by storm. I don't usually get excited by gaillardias, but I'll never forget the first time I laid eyes on this beauty...my wife slapped me (just kidding). The compact, 15" tall x 12" wide, well-branched mound is topped from June to August with the most incredible flowers. Each upturned 3" wide flower head looks as if miniature honeysuckle flowers are attached to a central cone. Each floret is red at the base, changing to bright yellow at the flared tips. You've got to see this to believe it. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05566
|
SunZone: 3-9 18" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Wow! This 2008 release from John Dixon of Washington's Skagit Gardens is an amazingly vigorous blanketflower forming a 18" tall x 3'+ wide clump. It is topped, starting in late April, with 3.5" wide bright orange flowers with widely-fluted tips surrounding a russet-brown cone. The flower shape is like G. 'Fanfare', but the color is radically different and the habit is quite a bit larger. You are going to love this drought-loving selection. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08306

Gaura
|
SunZone: 6-10, possibly colder 30" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
Sometimes, it's just hard to hold down your excitement, and this is surely the case with Gaura 'Pink Cloud'. We have trialed this Loleta Powell hybrid, and it has truly blown away the competition. Borrowing its upright habit from Gaura 'Dauphin' and color from Gaura 'Siskiyou Pink', Gaura 'Pink Cloud' provides a stunning, 30" tall, upright deer-resistant plant that is truly smothered with brilliant pink flowers! While other gauras have slowed here by October, Gaura 'Pink Cloud' is still a mass of color. If you have found the others a little on the "limp" side, you will love Gaura 'Pink Cloud'! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03989

Gentiana
|
Sun to Part SunZone: 3-7 18" tall Origin: USA
NEW!
This splendid native gentian hails from the colder regions of the country...Canada south to Missouri. The 18" slightly lax stems arise from a dormant rosette in spring, clothed in pinky-shaped glossy green leaves. In late September and October, the clumps are topped with clusters of blue-lavender flowers resembling a mini southern bottle-tree. G. andrewsii prefers slightly moist alkaline conditions, although we have found it to also grow well in slightly acidic ground, while tolerating seasonal droughts. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08366

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 6b-8, at least 12" tall Origin: USA
NEW!
This rarely-offered native NC gentian grows to only 12" tall with short stems covered with whorls of thumbnail size, rubbery, dark green leaves. In the fall, from October through November, the clump is smothered in clusters of narrowly open tubular blue flowers. G. catesbaei prefers moist to boggy conditions where competition is minimal...we have been thrilled at the ease of culture. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01411
|
Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5b-9, at least 18" tall Origin: USA
This easy-to-grow and spectacular NC native is also found from Illinois through Louisiana in low woodlands as well as in bogs. The 18" tall stems are clothed with green linear leaves and topped in September and October with clusters of closed flowers resembling tiny blue cigars which house the reproductive organs...and we now know how much fun cigars can be! Soapwort gentian is best used as a mingler in the border or as a specimen in the woodland garden...a very versatile garden plant! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01969
|
Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 4-7, at least 8" tall Origin: Caucasus
This great gentian from high elevations in the Caucasus Mountains has been one of the few gentians to thrive in our hot, humid summers. G. septemfida var. lagodechiana makes a 8" tall x 15" wide semi-sprawling clump of dark green leaves highlighted, in July and August, with open, cobalt-blue, often white-centered flowers. The variety "lagodechiana" hails from Lagodekhi, Georgia, and is shorter than the typical species. G. septemfida prefers an open, well-drained, but slightly moist site. We really love this plant, but keep it clear of more aggressive neighbors. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07737

Geranium
|
Sun to Part SunZone: 4-8a 15" tall Origin: Hybrid
Garden designers who enjoy working with wild color combinations will love this introduction from famed Orkney geranium breeder, Alan Bremmer. Geranium 'Anne Thomson' is our favorite of the gold-leaf hardy geraniums, and in our trials, the heat tolerance of this G. procurrens x G. psilostemon hybrid has put the old standard, G. 'Ann Folkard', to shame. The dazzling, bright yellow-foliaged, 3' wide clump is topped with violet flowers from spring until midsummer. Geranium 'Anne Thomson' remained vigorous after 70+ days over 90 degrees F in our miserable 2002 summer. We think you will love this 2005 Award of Garden Merit winner! If you think Geranium 'Rozanne' and G. 'Jolly Bee' are great, you'll love this purple-flowered form (RHS 80A). The name must be another example of male color-blindness. Netherlands nurseryman Marco van Noort found this mutation in his plants of Geranium 'Jolly Bee' and subsequently named it Geranium 'Pink Penny' after Minnesotan Penny Aguirre. Just like its parent, Geranium 'Pink Penny' makes a 15" tall x 18" wide mound of white-patterned green foliage that is topped from June until frost with 2.5" wide purple flowers, each highlighted with dramatic dark veining. This is a tremendously exciting new introduction for everyone, but especially for those of us in the geranium-impaired southeastern US. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07569
|
Sun to Part SunZone: 4-8 15" tall Origin: Hybrid
This amazing new geranium has proven to be an outstanding performer...hence, it is one of the only patented hardy geraniums. G. 'Rozanne' was discovered in 1990 in the garden of Donald and Rozanne Waterer of Somerset, England, and released by Blooms of Bressingham. This sterile hybrid of G. himalayense x G. wallichianum 'Buxton's Variety' makes an 18" wide clump, topped from June until frost with large 2.5" blue-violet flowers. We think you should let Rozanne do her thing in your garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05111

Sun to Part SunZone: 4-9 14" tall Origin: Europe, Asia
This amazing new selection of hardy geranium from Holland's Coen Jansen boasts large, intensely pink flowers, each highlighted by red markings radiating from the center of the flower. Starting in late spring and continuing most of the summer, the compact 14" tall mound of dark-green cutleaf foliage is covered in flowers. We have found this to be a really great color break in Geranium sanguineum. For tough, dry, sunny areas, this is the perfect solution. Coen named the geranium for his street, "Ankummer Es." Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04969

We have grown Geranium 'Sirak' for over a decade and are more impressed each year. This superb hybrid of Geranium gracile and G. ibericum occurred in the garden of German plantsman, Hans Simon. The vigorous 2' wide clumper is topped in May and June (NC) with an abundance of 5-petaled lavender pink flowers, each highlighted by a white central blotch. The only question remains, who is Sirak?

Geranium 'Stephanie' arose at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh from seed sent by the Cambridge University Botanic Garden as G. peloponnesiacum. It was recognized that this seedling was, in fact, a hybrid between the Greek G. peloponnesiacum and the alpine Caucasican species G. renardii. The result was G. 'Stephanie' which forms a 14" tall x 18" wide tight clump of textured, light green, rounded foliage, topped in April and May with upturned, light mauvy blue (RHS 85A/B) flowers, highlighted by dark purple veins that radiate out from the center...a heavy spring bloomer and a stellar performer in our heat and humidity! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07693

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-8, at least 14" tall Origin: Hybrid
Geranium 'Sweet Heidy' is the next generation of breeding from the work that produced the wonderful G. 'Jolly Bee' and G. 'Rozanne'. G. 'Sweet Heidy' comes from Dutch nurseryman Marco van Noort, who named his new selection after his wife. The 14" tall x 18" wide open habit from the G. wallichianum parent is similar to G. 'Jolly Bee', but the large blue-lavender flower has a distinctive white central pattern that contrasts nicely with the dark stamens (sexual parts). Just like its parent, G. 'Sweet Heidy' flowers from late spring until fall. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07464

Gladiolus 'Carolina Primrose' was discovered at an old abandoned NC residence, a tribute to its amazing durability. For us, this extremely hardy form (or hybrid) of Gladiolus dalenii var. primulinus makes a fast-multiplying clump that produces 3' tall flower spikes from mid-June through mid-July in NC. The floral spikes are laden with soft butter yellow flowers darkening toward the throat, where you will also find small reddish-brown stripes....that's stripe throat, not strep. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08885

Sun to Part SunZone: 6-9, at least 24" tall Origin: Mediterranean Europe
(aka: G. byzantinus) We are pleased to finally offer the old-fashioned Gulf Coast pass-along gladiolus...thanks to Texas plantsman, Greg Grant. The 2' tall spikes of intensely tacky, fluorescent cerise-red flowers top the late-January emerging foliage, from late April through early May. G. 'Cruentus' could be classified as a spring ephemeral since the entire clump is dormant by early summer...be sure to mark the spot when planting summer groundcovers. We tried to find a matching RHS color code with no luck...obviously royal taste doesn't allow this color in the old UK. As you can imagine, its drought-tolerance and ease of culture are legendary! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05857

SunZone: 6-9, at least 18" tall Origin: Mediterranean Europe
NEW!
Gladiolus 'Texas Snowflurry' is a rare white-flowered form of the popular G. byzantinus. This is a demure dwarf 18" tall rock garden plant, not to be confused with the large tacky (we're not saying tacky is bad) florist glads. For us, Gladiolus 'Texas Snowflurry' flowers in mid-April through early May, then goes dormant for the summer. The corms for Gladiolus 'Texas Snowflurry' never get large, even compared to other G. communis ssp. byzantinus clones, so don't freak out when you see their size...they are ready to flower. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08874

Open House/Web-Only!
(aka: Gladiolus coll #A12NC-018B) We found this abandoned gladiolus on a roadside bank near the town of Bolivia in Brunswick Co., NC. Of all the glads we have rescued from such sites, this one has shown the most vigor. The multiplication rate and subsequent flowering potential is unrivaled. For us, the clumps are topped with 40" flower spikes in early July. The lower petals are soft yellow, blending perfectly with the soft peach color of the top petals. Many Gladiolus dalenii forms have proven to be hardy into Zone 6 for those who don't mind experimenting. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05510

SunZone: 6-9, possibly colder 48" tall Origin: Hybrid
NEW!
This amazing Gladiolus dalenii hybrid was introduced to the market by the former Holbrook Nursery in NC, after if was discovered in the frigid mountain town of Boone, NC by extension agent, Jeff Owen. The 4' tall stalks open in early June (NC) with medium-sized flowers of peachy-apricot, highlighted by a yellow center and red streaked throat. Although we list this as Zone 6, we have heard many reports of Zone 5 hardiness. Gladiolus 'Boone' multiplies obscenely fast, so you'll have plenty to share. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08854

From South African seed, we selected this amazing form of the durable and easy-to-grow Gladiolus dalenii var. dalenii. Gladiolus 'Halloweenie' produces 5' tall flower spikes of intense scarlet orange flowers, each with a bright yellow throat. The flowering show doesn't start here until Halloween...slightly earlier in warmer climates. This is a truly tacky plant for a tacky holiday...get one today! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05990

The year was 2004, the highway, Interstate 40, the exit, Old Fort, NC. Though it isn't advertised, old Ford vans can go from 60 mph to 0 in just a few seconds as I can attest when I saw this long-abandoned gladiolus growing by the guardrail just outside Asheville, NC. Upon closer inspection, it was not the Gladiolus dalenii often found in southern gardens, but an old garden hybrid...a very winter hardy hybrid. Back in our trial gardens, Gladiolus 'Old Fort' produces stunning 7' tall sturdy flower spikes, starting in late June and continuing into July, often with repeat flowering. This glad probably had a name in a former life, but after being stranded on the highway for years, its memory ain't what it used to be. If you recognize it, please let us know. Despite new gladiolus cultivars being bred not to be winter hardy, there are still some stunning old selections that make reliable perennials in Zone 7 and possibly colder. One such clone is Gladiolus 'Priscilla', which we found not being the queen of the desert, but instead all alone at an abandoned home in Franklinton, NC. This robust grower produces an abundance of tall 5' spikes starting in mid-June (NC). Each stunning spike is composed of large white flowers, highlighted with a light yellow center and a frilly, hot-pink edge. This is one gaudy gladiolus...not exactly a masculine flower you'd expect to see used at a Harley convention. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06712

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7b-9, at least 12" tall Origin: Argentina
This amazing PDN introduction from 4,000' elevation in Argentina is a new addition to our list of winter-hardy gesneriads. G. nematanthodes 'Evita' is late to emerge...usually June in NC. The compact 1' tall x 4' wide mass of short stems bearing soft green foliage is topped, starting in August, with 1" long bells of the most brilliant orange-red we have ever seen on anything other than a custom Ferrari. For us, flowering continues until frost. G. nematanthodes also spreads by above-ground stolons, soon making a wonderful groundcover. If you like brilliant colors, grab your camera and sunglasses. Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-9a 6" tall Origin: Mexico
NEW!
We have grown this native Mexican (not from Paraguay as the name implies) succulent for decades and were shocked to find out years ago, that it has amazing winter hardiness...our plants have easily survived 7 degrees F. The 6" wide rosettes that form atop succulent stems are composed of fleshy, brittle, silver-brown leaves. If the leaves break off...which they will, not to worry since each leaf will root and sprout a new plant. Eventually, ghost plant will make a patch to 15" wide. Good drainage and protection from winter moisture in cold climates is essential. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08812

The 6' tall x 10' wide, deer-resistant shrub is clothed with rigid dark green needles, topped in early spring with small clusters of peachy red flowers.
