NEW!
Agave 'Mateo' is a new unique century plant that was discovered as a seedling in a block of Agave bracteosa at San Marcos Growers of California. We are uncertain about the other parent, but speculate that Agave lophantha may be involved. The non-spiny 18" tall x 3' wide rosette of rough green leaves is highlighted by a central chartreuse-yellow stripe down the middle of each leaf. We haven't overwintered this in the ground yet, but if our guess of parentage is correct, then 0 degrees F should not be a problem. That being said, we aren't making any hardiness promises until next year. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08929

New crop available 9-10-2010 This splendid Yucca Do selection of the tough Agave montana was made in October 1997 from La Encantada in Mexico's Nuevo Leon Province at 9,080' elevation. Agave 'Baccarat' makes a stunning 2' tall x 3' wide clump of broad, glaucous leaves, each ending in a large black spine. The stunning silvery bud imprints (not the beer memorabilia) on the leaf backs are reminiscent of cut crystal; hence, the plant was named after Baccarat fine crystal. (syn: Agave YD 13-74) This unusual agave comes from Ciudad de Maize, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, where it was spotted in 2001 by Yucca Do's Wade Roitsch. This species, or possibly a natural Agave salmiana hybrid, is occasionally seen in Texas and California gardens...always unlabeled. This particular form makes a 5' tall x 8' wide, rapidly-growing clump with very undulating, broad, blue-green, soft-textured leaves...quite stunning when you run into one. We start seeing significant damage when temperatures drop below 12 degrees F.

This delightful Mexican agave, native up to 7,000' elevation in Durango, Chihuahua, and Sinaloa is closely allied with the better known Agave filifera, except for, of course, more hairs. If the amount of hair now defines a species, bald guys watch out. From seed, our plants are wildly variable...some having filifers that would make '80s hair bands proud, to prematurely balding, to sorely in need of RogaineŽ. Mature 4'+ wide specimens of 2' long leaves can be mistaken for Yucca elata, except for the sturdy terminal spine. When old clumps develop more white hairs than you have, start looking for a 16' tall flower spike with cool green and pink flowers. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05656

This fabulous agave was first brought into the US by the late Lynn Lowery, who found it growing between 3,000' and 7,000' elevation in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. It was planted around Dallas and survived for decades unscathed by cold. Agave expert Greg Starr, curious to know its identity, retraced Lynn's route and found the original population in Mexico, where it was determined to be a new species and subsequently named in 2002. In form, it looks like an Agave parryi on steroids, forming a 36" tall x 5' wide (in 5 years), symmetrical clump of wide grey leaves. It has proven to be one of the best agaves for cold, wet climates, far outperforming almost all other species. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06306

This form of Agave palmeri is our seedling selection from a population of plants growing near Divisadero, in the northern Mexican State of Sonora. We found this form to be quite distinct from all of the AZ populations that we have visited. The tall silver-blue leaves, edged with hundreds of tiny teeth, and with great bud imprinting, form a 3' tall x 3' wide (in 7 years) slowly-offsetting clump...quite dramatic. This Yucca Do selection of the Mexican Agave parrasana was selected from a large block of seedlings at Arizona's Mountain States Nursery. Agave parrasana hails from the limestone mountains of Coahuilla, Mexico at elevations of 4,500' to 8,000'. Agave 'Meat Claw' is a compact, slow-growing, rarely offsetting clumper to only 10" tall x 1' wide in 8 years, composed of upright-held powder blue leaves...a great rock garden specimen. A. 'Meat Claw' was selected for its wickedly-long hook-like spines that emerge bright red. Our clumps planted in 2001 have endured temperatures down to 6 degrees F. Thanks to Brian Kemble for sharing seed of this interesting cross of Agave parrasana x colorata. We're not sure what to expect, so we've picked out a few to trial and are making the others available while they last. I would expect a nice blue rosette to 1' tall x 2' wide. Agave parrasana is fine in our climate, but Agave colorata isn't quite winter hardy, so I'd expect a good Zone 8 offspring, that could surprise us by going a bit colder. We originally got this plant from Randy Baldwin of San Marcos Growers under the invalid name of Agave parryi 'Minima Variegata'. Not only was the cultivar name invalid, but some agave experts think it might not even be Agave parryi. We're leaving the parryi species name intact, since it resembles the other Agave parryi forms we grow. This stunning specimen makes a compact 1' wide clump of blue leaves, each surrounded by a wide creamy border. Even where it's not hardy, Agave 'Cream Spike' makes a stunning container specimen. This is not the same plant as Agave parryi patonii 'Minor Variegata' or Agave parryi 'Mexico Variegata'. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07241

New crop available 9-2-2010 We've grown Agave parryi from all along its native range, but the best clone is still the one growing at the JC Raulston Arboretum in NC. We tracked this clone back to a plant that came from J.C.'s 1979 trip to California's Strybing Arboretum. Strybing obtained their plant from California professor Jack Napton in 1971. This special clone forms large symmetrical 2' tall x 3' wide rosettes that seem particularly well-adapted to winters in wet, humid climates. It is slow to offset compared with many forms, which makes propagation more of a challenge. This clone needed a name and we could not think of anything better than to name it after the late Dr. J.C. Raulston. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08152

Agave parryi ssp. truncata, considered one of the most beautiful of all the agaves, has a very limited distribution, found only in Durango, Mexico, where it can best be described as short, fat, blue, and producing lots of offspring. Come to think of it, that also describes most of the guys at the local saloon on Saturday night. Each 18" tall x 18" wide robust clump is topped at maturity with a phallic flower bud that enlarges into a 3" diameter, 20' tall flower spike, which could easily be used for a flagpole...we like horticultural multi-tasking. Remember to keep it well-drained and dry in the winter months. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05247

This north Mexican species makes a very cute and non-offsetting rosette to only 5" tall x 10" wide, composed of very dark green leaves, highlighted with an abundance of white filifers (hairs). In the wild, A. polianthiflora can be found clinging to pine and oak forested rock outcrops up to 6,500' elevation...come to think of it, that's exactly what I do at that elevation. The 6' tall spikes of pinkish-red flowers top the plant at maturity. It takes approximately 4-8 years for A. polianthiflora to prepare for meaningful sex in captivity, but it sure beats every 100 years in the wild. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07562

I first saw this amazing agave at California's Ruth Bancroft Garden, where it was in full flower. A. potrerana hails from the high mountains (5000-8000') in the north Mexican provinces of Chihuahua and Coahuila. The 2' tall x 4' wide solitary rosette of grey-green leaves is topped when mature with a stunning 20' tall, giant, bottlebrush-like inflorescence combining the psychedelic colors of red, orange, yellow, and pink. A. potrerana is almost never grown in cold winter climates, a surprise since author Howard Gentry, in Agaves of Continental North America, states "It grows in a habitat with hard winter freezes..." In our trials, it has sailed through 9 degrees F so far. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07828

We haven't been able to track down the origin of this splendid selection of Agave salmiana, nor do we have a full-size plant to get mature dimensions from yet. This outstanding selection of Agave salmiana var. ferox was given to us by the late Texas plant explorer Logan Calhoun just before his death. This is a freely offsetting variety that you can share with all your friends...those of your friends that you like enough to risk your life for by removing the offsetting pups. Agave schottii v. treleasei is one of those agaves with a sordid past, as well as present. Agave schottii is a small agave with narrow upright blue-green 10" long leaves occurring on rocky outcrops in Arizona. We've long had a love affair with this elegant naturally-occurring Mexican hybrid (Agave ferdinandi-regis x Agave scabra). This selection comes to us from the wonderful Ruth Bancroft Garden in California. The rigidly upright, triangular, olive-green leaves with a blue cast are thicker than an offensive lineman's neck and have the feel of sharkskin. Agave 'Sharkskin Shoes' forms a stunningly architectural clump, eventually to 3' tall x 4' wide. Agave 'Sharkskin Shoes' is easy-to-grow but very slow to reach mature size, as evidenced by our 6-year-old plants which are only 18" tall x 2' wide. In 2007, we listed this as Agave 'Sharkskin' which we now know is a similar but different clone; hence, the name change. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07471

Agave 'Kazo Bana' is one of the best of the gold-edged forms of Agave victoriae-reginae. Kazo Bana, which means "flower of Kazo", was named by Japanese variegated plant guru, Yoshimichi Hirose. Our 3-year-old plants are now 3" tall x 5" wide, but we expect them to mature at 10" tall x 18" wide with age...great age. The tight, slowly offsetting clumps are composed of thick dark green leaves highlighted by a butterscotch-gold border, and topped with attractive white markings. I first saw this agave when visiting Gary Hammer's former California nursery...a plant Gary had discovered in Mexico, which variegated upon his return home. This deliciously wicked little agave is a selection of A. x leopoldii (A. filifera v. filifera x A. filifera v. schidigera) that forms a 8" tall x 15" wide clump of 1/4" wide bayonet-like dark green leaves, each etched in white, edged with a chartreuse border, then covered in curly white hairs that would make Santa proud.
