Habranthus
Habranthus 'Pink Flamingos' (Pink Flamingos Rain Lily)

Habranthus 'Pink Flamingos' (Pink Flamingos Rain Lily)

SunZone: 7b-10 8" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! We originally received this from Carl Schoenfeld of Yucca Do as a Habranthus hybrid. After trials in NC, we agree with Carl that it is an exceptionally floriferous hybrid of Habranthus robustus, so together we coined the name Habranthus 'Pink Flamingos', which well-describes a clump in flower. As with most rain lilies, this fast-multiplying clump starts flowering for us in midsummer and continues after each rain shower. Once the clump becomes well-established, it will bowl you over with its floral show. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06244

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-9, at least 24" tall Origin: North Africa
Open House/Web-Only! We really like this variegated adult selection of the Algerian ivy cultivar Hedera 'Gloire de Marengo' from Richard Davis of the Ivy Farm. For us, it makes a 2' tall x 18" wide clump of large, glaucous green leaves edged with a wide white border...a stunning evergreen clump for dry sites in the garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06608

Hedera helix 'Prince Avenue' (Prince Avenue Adult Ivy)

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9, guessing 60" tall Origin: Europe
Open House/Web-Only! Visitors at our Fall Open House have been asking about this for years, so here it is. This amazing selection of adult ivy from Timbercrest Farms makes a large evergreen woody perennial (shrub) to 5' tall x 7' wide in 5 years. The glossy, dark green leaves make for an attention-getting garden specimen. In mid-September, the clump is in full flower with alien-like flower heads that attract every cool insect within miles. Hedera helix should not be planted in the Pacific Northwest, where it grows far too well and can become a problem seeding into natural areas. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06647

Hedychium 'Carnival' (Carnival Hardy Ginger Lily)

Hedychium coronarium (Hardy White Butterfly Ginger Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10 60" tall Origin: Tropical Asia
Open House/Web-Only! This is the real attention-getter in late summer and fall as the rich, honeysuckle-like fragrance pervades the evening air from the 2", butterfly-like white flowers. The stalks emerge from a thick, slowly growing rhizome and grow through the spring and summer. In late summer, the pinecone-like buds form atop the stems. Soon the flowers emerge, a few each day, to perfume the air until the first heavy frost...ooh la la! Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #01308
$20.00

Hedychium 'Daniel Weeks' (Daniel Weeks Hardy Ginger Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10 50" tall Origin: Hybrid
This 1992 Gainesville Tree Farm introduction (probably H. flavescens x gardnerianum) is one of the longest-flowering of the ginger lilies, starting here in late July or early August, and continuing until frost. The 4'+ tall stalks are topped with scrumptious, golden-yellow flowers with a dark gold throat. In early evening, the air is perfumed with their strong honeysuckle-like fragrance. This rapid grower will make a 3-4' wide clump of arching canes in only a couple of seasons. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #03218
$20.00

From retired plant breeder Dr. Moy of the San Antonio Botanical Garden comes this new hybrid (probably Hedychium flavum x coccineum) with white paint-like speckles covering the otherwise green foliage. In September, the clumps are topped with fragrant, peachy-orange flowers with a darker orange throat...exquisitely fragrant! Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #02711

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10 108" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! This Tom Wood hybrid is the tallest and most imposing ginger lily we grow, both for size and for flower. Starting in late July, the towering 9' tall stalks of Hedychium 'Elizabeth' are topped with clusters of giant, brilliant reddish-orange flowers. In late afternoon, the exquisite honeysuckle-like fragrance wafts through the garden from its lofty perch...pure poetry. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #03248
$20.00

Hedychium 'Flaming Torch' (Flaming Torch Hardy Ginger Lily)

Hedychium 'Flaming Torch' (Flaming Torch Hardy Ginger Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10 75" tall Origin: Asia
Open House/Web-Only! (syn: Hedychium coccineum var. aurantiacum PDN Form) We grew this for a long time as a selection of Hedychium coccineum, but now know it to be a hybrid with that species. Hedychium 'Flaming Torch' forms a huge mass of 6-7' tall stalks, each topped with a 1' long head of orange flowers in mid-July (NC). Following flowering, a new set of stems emerge, which flower in September and October. The clump looks like a series of giant torches...quite stunning, but allow plenty of room. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #03240
$20.00

Hedychium gardnerianum 'Compactum' (Hardy Ginger Lily)

Hedychium gardnerianum 'Compactum' (Hardy Ginger Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10 48" tall Origin: Nepal
From Nepal comes possibly the showiest of all of the hedychium species. H. gardnerianum boasts giant flower heads of brilliant yellow, fragrant flowers, but the highlight is the dark orange stigmas that protrude from each flower and provide a stunning contrast from September through November...weather permitting. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #02991

Hedychium greenii (Red Butterfly Ginger)

Hedychium greenii (Red Butterfly Ginger)

Sun to Part SunZone: 8-10, at least 36" tall Origin: Asia
NEW! Hedychium greenii has long been one of our favorite gingers, only we have never been able to overwinter it outdoors until now. Finally, a form that we got from plantswoman Linda Guy has survived since 2007 including one winter at 9 degrees F. The 3' tall stalks, that emerge for us in late June, are adorned with dark olive green, red-backed leaves. The stalks are topped, starting in mid-July and lasting until fall, with orange-red terminal flowers. Since H. greenii is sterile, it has learned to reproduce by plantlets that form on the old flower stalks. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #08596
$22.00

Hedychium 'Kin Ogi' (Kin Ogi Hardy Ginger Lily)

Hedychium 'Kin Ogi' (Kin Ogi Hardy Ginger Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10, at least 72" tall Origin: Hybrid
We have grown this little-known ginger for several years under the misspelled name 'Kanogie'. One of our favorites, the strong 6' tall stalks are topped in late summer with stunning 1' tall flowers heads of large, butterscotch-orange, fragrant flowers. The flower color is quite unique among the gingers we grow, and a plant in full flower is a crowd stopper. You are probably wondering what a Kin Ogi is? We assume it is the person who found the ginger, but it could be something much more fun...let us know if you know about Kin Ogi. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #07459
$22.00

Hedychium 'Moy Giant' (Moy Giant Hardy Ginger Lily)

Open House/Web-Only! From Dr. Moy's breeding efforts at the San Antonio Botanical Garden comes this hybrid ginger (probably Hedychium gardnerianum x coronarium). The 7' tall, lushly foliaged clumps are topped in fall (early October in NC) with large, lusciously fragrant trusses of very light yellow flowers, each with a contrasting dark yellow eye. This has proven to be one of the best of the new ginger introductions in our trials. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #02712
$20.00

Hedychium 'Pradhanii' (Pradhan's Hardy Ginger Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10 96" tall Origin: Hybrid    alternate image
Open House/Web-Only! Year in and year out, the most spectacular ginger in our garden is still an old hybrid from India, Hedychium 'Pradhanii'. A mature clump of this vigorous grower is composed of dozens of 7' tall stalks, each topped with large spikes of light peach-colored flowers from late summer until frost. The throat of each flower is peach-colored, changing to yellow near the end of the petals...a light honeysuckle fragrance is included at no extra charge! If you are looking for just one showstopper, this is hard to beat! Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #01569

Hedychium 'Vanilla Ice' (Hardy Ginger Lily)

Hedychium 'Vanilla Ice' (Hardy Ginger Lily)

SunZone: 7b-10 36" tall Origin: Hybrid
We are pleased to finally offer Hedychium 'Vanilla Ice', a selection from H. 'Dr. Moy' from NC's Mark and Louisa Messenbrink that was introduced in limited numbers around the year 2000. H. 'Vanilla Ice' has much more white flecking than its parent, which reduces it in both size and vigor...a good thing for smaller gardens. The rare, reverted, larger-growing, less-variegated shoots should be promptly removed. In our trials, it rarely exceeds 3' in height and is topped in late summer with deliciously fragrant peachy-pink flowers...a real charmer! Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #08099
$30.00

Helianthus
Helianthus angustifolius 'First Light' PP 13,150 (First Light Swamp Sunflower)

Helianthus angustifolius 'First Light' PP 13,150 (First Light Swamp Sunflower)

SunZone: 5-9a 48" tall Origin: USA
You are sure to love this Keith Hammett (of New Zealand) selection of our US native Helianthus angustifolius. Instead of the typical 10' tall specimen, Helianthus 'First Light' forms a nice deer-resistant compact clump of fuzzy linear leaves, topped from late September through October with terminal spikes of 2" bright yellow-orange daisies. Frankly, it should have been called "last light," but I guess it's one of those southern hemisphere things. Regardless, we have long needed a more compact swamp sunflower...rejoice! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04719
$12.00

Helianthus angustifolius 'Low Down' PP 13,197 (Low Down Swamp Sunflower)

Helianthus angustifolius 'Low Down' PP 13,197 (Low Down Swamp Sunflower)

SunZone: 5-9 12" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only! Who needs genetic engineering or nuclear power plant accidents when you've got Mother Nature? Yes, we're talking about the hot, incredible shrinking sunflower. Imagine taking our native swamp sunflower, Helianthus angustifolius, and shrinking it from 8' tall to 1' tall. The leaves are still intact, as are the flowers; it's just now you can plant it in the rock garden instead of the back of the border. In October, the 20" wide clump is truly smothered with large, yellow sunflower flowers. This outrageous new deer-resistant introduction is just waiting for a place in even the smallest of gardens...get yours today! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04946
$12.00

Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' (Lemon Queen Sunflower)

Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' (Lemon Queen Sunflower)

SunZone: 4-9a 80" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only! Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' is our favorite selection of the naturally-occurring midwestern US hybrid of Helianthus pauciflorus var. subrhomboideus x Helianthus tuberosus. In spring, Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' begins its climb to the skies, and only stops when it reaches heights between 6' and 8' feet tall. In our garden, the sturdy stems are covered with 2", soft lemon-yellow flowers in July and August. This clumping back-of-the-border sunflower is tolerant of both moist or very dry soils. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04212
$12.00

Helicodiceros
Helicodiceros muscivorus (Pig Butt Arum)

Helicodiceros muscivorus (Pig Butt Arum)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7-10, possibly colder 12" tall Origin: Mediterranean Europe
NEW! You can bet this common name wasn't coined by a Wall Street marketing firm. Helicodiceros, an easy-to-grow first cousin to the famed aroid Dracunculus vulgaris, grows on the rocky coastal cliffs on the Mediterranean Islands of Corsica, Sardinia, and the Balearics. The offsetting tubers give rise to the 1' tall, duck-foot-shaped, green, three-dimensional foliage, which emerges in very early spring. Later in spring, the spectacular tan- and purple-speckled bud emerges from the foliage, then opens parallel to the ground as a large flesh-colored spathe highlighted by purple tails (spadix) which emerge from the "crack." The open flower resembles the backside of a flatulent pig...in image and in fragrance. If you grow this, it's best not to mention it on your eHarmony ® profile. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08667
$20.00

Heliconia
Heliconia schiedeana (Hardy Lobster Claws)

Heliconia schiedeana (Hardy Lobster Claws)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 8-10, at least 72" tall Origin: Mexico
NEW! Heliconia schiedeana is the most cold hardy species of lobster claw. Although we have had it survive 10 degrees F in the ground, it requires two-year-old growth to produce flowers. Protection, such as a banana cage filled with mulch, should do the trick. When happy, the 6' tall stalk of bold thalia-like foliage is topped from summer through fall with upright, bright red, lobster-like inflorescences adorned with bright yellow flowers at the axils. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08710
$15.00
