So, ol' Hart liked it both ways...straight and with a petticoat...what a kinky dude. Back in the English Victorian era, collectors named several hundred crested varieties of Hart's-tongue, but only a few remain. A. scolopendrium 'Cristata' is a selection of the European form of this species that makes a tight rosette of shiny green tongue-like leaves, each ending in a petticoat crest. This unusual yet naturally-occurring fern hybrid from Alabama (formerly xAsplenosorus) is the result of a conjugal visit between two native species, Asplenium platyneuron and Asplenium rhizophyllum (formerly Camptosorus rhizophyllus). The 6" tall x 10" wide, rock garden-sized clumps prefer slightly moist alkaline soils. When established, A. x ebenoides will occasionally produce plantlets on the leaf tips, thanks to the walking fern genes...gotta love those unusual breeding occurrences from Alabama. Ruth acquired the aster from her maid, Fanny, who acquired it as a pass-along plant from her grandmother. This spectacular aster is the last to flower in our garden, usually in October and November. 'Fanny', the aster--not the maid--makes a nice clump to 4' in width and is smothered with 1" blue flowers...awesome! For a fall show in a hot dry site, a nice 'Fanny' is a hard thing to beat. This is not a fern to be tried by beginners, as it is not as easy to cultivate as most others. In nature, it usually grows with its roots hidden beneath a large rock. This selection of deciduous deer-resistant lady fern from Europe is one of the most unique ferns available today. Found in 1857 in Ireland in the garden of a Mrs. Frizell, the tatting fern is known to most avid gardeners. We obtained this gem in 1994 from Roger Grounds and Diana Grenfell, former owners of Apple Court Nursery in the UK. This amazing selection of Japanese painted fern not only has lovely purple, silver and green markings, but each leaf is dramatically crested both up the sides and onto the tip. Our specimen in the garden has matured at 1' tall x 2' wide. This is a superb deer-resistant addition to the woodland garden that we were very pleased to name and introduce to commerce in 2003.

We first saw this amazing selection of the deer-resistant Japanese painted fern on a West Coast trip in 1999 and have been patiently waiting for adequate stock to offer. Actually, "patiently" might not be a good choice of words. Regardless, the new leaves are a stunning purple with silver stripes along the vein lines and tips. We simply adore this stunning clumping bamboo that makes an 18' tall deer-resistant clump (35' in more tropical areas) of 1" diameter canes, vertically striped gold and green. We have observed slight foliage burn at 10 degrees F and some cane dieback at 8 degrees F. While we also have had clumps die to the ground at 0 degrees F, they have always resprouted nicely when summer warmth arrived, although it takes a few years to recover their full size. (syn: Bambusa glaucescens 'Fernleaf') This compact cultivar of the clumping Bamboo multiplex usually reaches 9-10', although reports exist of 20' heights in perfect conditions. The 1/2" wide upright green canes are composed of culms every 4-6". From these culms, tufts of small stems emerge bearing densely packed, small green leaves. Because of its thick nature, Bambusa 'Fernleaf' is highly prized as a short, thick hedge. When temperatures drop below 6 degrees F, the plants will probably defoliate, and the canes will die to the ground at 0 degrees F. No muss, no fuss, no trouble! We have long experimented with this heat-loving, clumping, deer resistant bamboo and still find it strangely underused in southeastern gardens. This 10' clumper dies to the ground at 8 degrees F, but returns late the next summer when the heat builds. In colder climates, it can be grown as an ornamental grass and cut to the ground in early spring. This easy-to-grow, drought-tolerant, deer-resistant US native is always a perennial favorite (pardon the pun) for the border or the wild garden. This native has upright stems clothed with peanut-like, trifoliate (three-lobed), blue-green waxy foliage on a clump that can easily cover an area 3' wide. In early spring before the clump bulks up, the awesome blue lupine-like flower racemes are held atop the foliage. Baptisia australis was selected by the Royal Horticultural Society as one of their top 200 plants of the last 200 years...quite an honor.

New crop available 1-6-2011 We grow lots of baptisia seed each year and this one of our Baptisia leucophaea seedlings stood out from all the rest after years of trials and was named and introduced in 2008. The early-emerging Baptisia 'Butterball' makes a compact 18" tall x 2' wide deer-resistant clump of glaucous foliage, adorned with obscenely large and floriferous pendulous spikes of creamy yellow flowers, starting in early April (in NC). Baptisia leucophaea cuttings aren't the easiest things to root, so the supply of plants is very limited.

This 1996 introduction by the late NC Botanical Garden curator Rob Gardner, was selected at the garden from rows of B. minor var. aberrans (not B. australis as is often printed) seedlings. Obviously, some unsafe plant sex had taken place with a wandering Baptisia alba. The result is an extremely vigorous, deer-resistant baptisia with charcoal-green stems (when mature) and dozens of giant lupine-like flower heads of dusty purple. You will grow to love this outstanding introduction more with each year as the clump matures...SUPERB!

New crop available 9-2-2010 Baptisia 'Screamin' Yellow' is a selection of Baptisia sphaerocarpa from native plant guru Larry Lowman. Compared to our Texas and Oklahoma collections, the leaves on this Arkansas selection are slightly larger and more yellow-green. In our gardens, Baptisia 'Screamin' Yellow' makes a 3' tall x 5' wide deer-resistant clump, topped in late April/early May with stunning 11" spikes of bright yellow flowers. For a drought-tolerant perennial and a great spring show, it don't get no better than this.

New crop available 9-9-2010 (aka: Bauhinia CY T 279) Finally, a hardy bauhinia that we have grown outdoors since 2004. The deciduous species emerges in late spring, producing long willowy branches to 12'-14' long. Each branch produces short tendrils designed for climbing, so a trellis or nearby woody plant would make a great display background. Starting in late August, the branches are adorned with 1.5" wide, pale pink, orchid-like flowers, each highlighted by a purple central streak. Very cute, but what's a beesia? Imagine taking an asarum and gluing tiny cimicifuga flowers on top and you've got the idea. This little-known cimicifuga relative hails from moist meadows and woodlands in the southwestern China provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, and Yunnan. The 8" tall x 1' wide rosettes are composed of dark, glossy green (maroon in winter) heart-shaped leaves, each highlighted by attractive lighter veins. The clumps are topped in spring with slender 10" tall purple spikes adorned with tiny white flowers...not for the pansy crowd. We have found these very easy to grow in slightly moist, rich woodland soil.
