Here's a great plant for our customers further north. We've always loved lily-of-the-valley, especially the variegated forms, but they are painfully slow in our southeast heat and wimpy winters. We are delighted to finally be able to share one of our favorites, the yellow-edged Convallaria 'Hardwick Hall'. Named after the famed English garden, Convallaria 'Hardwick Hall' is a vigorous clone with 9" tall, glaucous leaves edged with a dramatic golden border. This rare NC native is another of the great overlooked garden plants growing naturally here in the Southeast. Native to swampy forested sites from NC to Florida, Coreopsis helianthoides is similar in growth habit to Coreopsis integrifolia. The shiny, uncut, dark green foliage adorns 30" tall clumps. From September to November, Coreopsis helianthoides is topped with a stunning show of yellow-orange daisies...perfect for an overly moist site in your garden, although it has performed beautifully for us in regular garden soil in full sun. From New York south to Florida, you are liable to run across Coreopsis major in open dry woodlands. So, why is it not grown in everyone's garden? Probably because it looks like crap (pardon my French) in the woods. Put a plant in full sun, and it becomes a killer perennial. The spreading rootstock makes a 5' clump in 5 years of sturdy 3' tall stems clothed in whorled green leaves. This stunning new deer-resistant corydalis from a recent China collection has performed amazingly well in our trials. What is normally a heat-sensitive woodland perennial is dazzling in our full-sun rock scree. For us, the 2'+ wide deciduous clump is topped with lovely, fragrant, wine-purple flowers, starting on tax day and continuing into early summer. This 1996 collection of plantsman Dan Hinkley comes from a rocky creek bank at 6,400' elevation in Sichuan, China. This has proved to be a great corydalis for the Southeast where many corydalis fear to tread. The lacy, olive-green foliage emerges in mid winter with a subtle silver-wash central pattern. In very early spring, the clumps are topped with short spikes of light lavender flowers with a dark purple lip. In very hot summers, the plants will go summer-dormant, but will reemerge in fall. This Asian terrestrial orchid has proven easy to grow as long as you give it humus-rich, moist well-drained organic soils. In appearance, it's like a giant version of our native cranefly orchid (Tipularia discolor). The 1' long x 2" wide green leaves emerge in the fall and remain until April when they being to go dormant as the flower spikes appear. The 1' tall flower spikes are topped in late April/early May (NC) with small mauvy lavender pendant tubular flowers...very cute, but certainly not what I'd call showy. This amazing plant has graced old Southern gardens and was popularized by Dr. Thad Howard of Texas who discovered the plant in the 1960s in Alamo Village, Texas. The fast-growing clumps of glossy, light green foliage are topped continuously through the summer with 20" tall stalks of large, spidery, fragrant flowers of pale pink. Although no one is sure of its origin, Dr. Howard suggests that Crinum americanum is one of the parents. Whatever combined to make this hybrid, it's a real winner in the garden. Pot size: 3 qt. This collection of the bog native Crinum americanum hails from just south of Tallahassee, Florida, and has thrived in our garden for many years. The glossy, dark green hippeastrum-like foliage forms 2' wide clumps that multiply from short underground runners. In late summer, the clumps are topped with 2' tall spikes, ending in clusters of large, fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers. Crinum 'Birthday Party' hails from the breeding program of crinum guru, the late Luther Bundrant, reportedly a cross of C. 'Bradley Giant' x C. scabrum. From the late H.B. Bradley of Australia comes this deep-wine flowered crinum with large open-faced flowers. This hybrid (probably C. scabrum x flaccidum) boasts much narrower, glossy, green foliage than the powellii hybrids, eventually making a 2' tall x 3' wide clump. Crinum 'Sacramento' has a mysterious background, but is reportedly a Les Hannibal cross between two forms of Crinum bulbispermum, one of which originated in the town of Kimberly, South Africa. Crinum bulbispermum 'Sacramento' makes an often solitary, 3' wide clump of arching blue-green foliage topped, starting in late spring, with 3' tall stalks of flowers that have particularly nice red-and-white striped, anise-fragranced flowers. Since Crinum 'Sacramento' rarely offsets, it is produced only as seedlings which come true to type. For us in NC, it is the earliest crinum to flower, often producing the first scape in late April. Crinum buphanoides (looks like a boophone...not related to a cell phone) comes from the northern regions of South Africa where it can be found growing in areas that are swampy during the summer months and dry in the winter. The large rosettes of fleshy glaucous leaves are often heavily rippled...a reason to grow the plant even if it didn't flower. In summer, the huge flower spikes are adorned with up to 50 white, sweetly-fragrant, star-shaped flowers, highlighted by purple stamens...similar to Crinum erubescens.

This Thad Howard hybrid (C. bulbispermum x C. 'Thaddeus Howard' [C. scabrum x C. bulbispermum]) has lush, glossy, green foliage making a 3-4' wide mound. Crinum 'Claude Davis' is a selection from Louisiana nurseryman Claude Davis, and was reportedly a seedling of Crinum. 'Cape Dawn'...we concur. The glossy green foliage forms a nice offsetting clump, topped starting in early June with 4' tall spikes of horizontal-facing, maroon-pink flowers...a most unusual shade of pink. This is still considered one of the finest crinum lilies for the home garden. This vigorously multiplying hybrid (possibly C. 'JC Harvey' x C. scabrum) was hybridized in Florida during the 1920s by Louis Bosanquet and named after his wife. C. 'Ellen Bosanquet' begins flowering in mid-June and continues through most of the summer. The large, reddish-purple flowers, on 2' stalks, emit a delightful spicy fragrance. One of the classic passalong plants of the deep South is Crinum erubescens...the South American equivalent of our native (and much more difficult to grow) Crinum americanum. The wide, glossy green leaves, to 30" long, form a large clump that actually spreads about by means of a large, underground rhizome. In moist soil, Crinum erubescens will make a large colony, while it is more restrained in normal garden soil. Once again we are able to offer the wonderful Les Hannibal dwarf crinum. This cross of Crinum moorei x Crinum americanum is the fastest-multiplying crinum that we have ever seen. The glossy, green, strap-like leaves remain attractive all season, unlike those of some of the hybrids. In our area, expect a heavy flowering show of large, deep pink flowers, held 1' above the foliage in midsummer, followed by a rebloom in early fall...a great plant for smaller gardens! Although it sounds like a fruity drug cocktail, Crinum 'Improved Peach Blow' is actually a Pat Malcolm hybrid of Crinum erubescens x Crinum album. The 3.5' tall sturdy stalks are topped, starting in mid-June (NC), with large outfacing flowers possessing an intoxicating fragrance (gardeners under 18 must be supervised). The carmine buds open white, then take on a light pink blush toward the end of the petals, which is complemented nicely by the pink petal backs. In form, it is similar to Crinum 'Mrs. James Hendry', C. 'Jubilee', and of course, the original C. 'Peach Blow' but with sturdier flower scapes. We are very pleased to offer this fast-offsetting crinum hybrid that was discovered by the late plant explorer, Thad Howard in Veracruz, Mexico. Thad found this plant growing in a naturalized population of the East African C. zeylanicum adjacent to a population of the native swamp-growing, C. loddigesianum (similar to C. americanum). Thad named it 'Marisco' (which means seafood) to commemorate the region's seafood industry. C. 'Marisco' makes a relatively small 3' wide clump (by crinum standards) of 30" long strap-like green leaves. The clump is adorned sporadically through the summer with 2' tall stalks of large fragrant white flowers with each petal highlighted by a central burgundy stripe. Moist soils will produce the best flowering.

This 1915 crinum hybrid from the late Henry Nehrling is a very compact and tidy crinum lily with rigidly erect, glossy bright, green foliage. Throughout the late spring and early summer, the offsetting clumps are topped with 4.5'+ tall sturdy spikes ending in large clusters of very fragrant white flowers with a pink lavender blush showing toward the tips of the flowers. Crinum 'Mrs. James Hendry' is one of the first crinums to flower in the spring, beginning for us in late April.

This hard-to-find but wonderful 1962 Thad Howard hybrid is a result of a cross of Crinum 'Seven Sisters' (C. americanum x bulbispermum) crossed back to Crinum bulbispermum var. album. The result is a rock-hardy, thick, green leaf clump that bears 24" tall stalks of clusters of large, pure white flowers with a deliciously sweet scent. For us, C. 'Ollene' flowers sporadically from early summer into fall. I cannot imagine why Crinum 'Ollene' is not grown in every southern garden. C. This much sought-after crinum lily originated in 1983 as a cross of C. procerum 'Splendens' x an unknown C. bulbispermum (or hybrid). It was discovered as a seedling in the garden of the late Marcia Clint Wilson by Texan Scott Ogden. The dark purple reflexed foliage makes a dramatic clump, topped in late spring and again in fall with 18" spikes of rosy pink flowers. Because of its C. bulbispermum parentage, C. 'Sangria' is much more winter hardy than other purple leaf crinums. Most of the material that is sold as C. 'Sangria' is simply C. procerum 'Splendens'. You've never seen anything quite like this...obviously, a steroid induced plant if I've ever seen one. This Tom Perry cross of C. This Katherine Clint hybrid of Crinum 'Ellen Bosanquet' x Crinum x powellii 'Alba' makes a relatively short clumper to 2' tall. From "Ellen", "Walter" inherits an early flowering habit, often starting as early as April in the deep South. Crinum 'Walter Flory' features 3' tall stalks of stunning pink bicolor flowers with burgundy stripes running from the base of the flower to the tips. Thanks to Scott Ogden for sharing this wonderful Luther Burbank hybrid, which he described as "arguably the most lovely crinum ever bred." We've finally got it propagated so we can spread this plant far and wide. Crinum 'White Queen' is a cross of Crinum x powellii 'Alba' and Crinum macowanii, which should give it very good hardiness...probably into Zone 6. The very long, wide leaves make an imposing, but slowly offsetting, clump topped in late spring with 3' tall spikes of large, pure white bells that emerge sideways then become pendent.
