Opuntia
Opuntia cacanapa 'Ellisiana' (Ellisiana Spineless Prickly Pear)

Opuntia cacanapa 'Ellisiana' (Ellisiana Spineless Prickly Pear)

SunZone: 7-10, possibly colder 36" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
(aka: O. 'Burbank Spineless') Thanks to Scott Ogden and David Ferguson for pointing out a major error...the plant we offered as 'Burbank Spineless' is the wrong plant. Burbank's plant is a form of the less hardy O. ficus-indica. Our plant is a spineless selection of the US/Mexican native O. cacanapa named 'Ellisiana'. For us, this fast-growing but compact opuntia makes a 6' wide x 3' tall deer-resistant mound (in 5 years) of 6" grey-green spineless pads. In August, the clump is topped with large, bright yellow flowers, followed by large red "pears." Well-drained winter soils are vital for best performance. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05564

Osmunda cinnamomea (Cinnamon Fern)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 3-9 36" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only! New crop available 9-2-2010 This deciduous NC native is one of our most stately large ferns. The upright clumps thrive in moist soils but also grow well under typical garden conditions...a great large foil in woodland settings. The fertile fronds arise in spring just above the sterile foliage as a phallic, cinnamon-colored spike in the center of the clump. In moist soils, a happy clump of cinnamon fern can reach 3' tall x 3' wide. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01366

Othonna
Othonna cheirifolia (Barbary Ragwort)

Othonna cheirifolia (Barbary Ragwort)

SunZone: 7b-8, at least 6" tall Origin: North Africa
Open House/Web-Only! This evergreen native to the African countries of Algeria and Tunisia is still little-known in the US, despite being used extensively by the late UK garden designer Gertrude Jekyll in the early 1900s. I dare say this is the only native to North Africa we grow, but it is one that has performed amazingly well through both our hot, humid summers and cold, wet winters. The tight mats, whose foliage resembles tiny upright silver-blue coke spoons, are topped by 8" tall flower stalks of yellow daisies in late spring. Othonna cheirifolia is right at home sited in a hot sun, well-drained rock garden or in a drought-prone seasonal container planting in colder climates. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06675

Oxalis
Oxalis regnellii 'Francis' (Francis False Shamrock)

Oxalis regnellii 'Francis' (Francis False Shamrock)

Part SunZone: 7b-10 8" tall Origin: S. America
Open House/Web-Only! This amazing heat-loving false shamrock came from our friends at Yucca Do, who got it from a Houston gardener named Francis, who discovered it as a garden seedling. Oxalis 'Francis' makes a 8" tall x 1' wide clump of 3-lobed shamrock-like bright purple leaves that look great all summer. The clumps are topped in fall with light lavender flowers just atop the foliage. Oxalis 'Francis' is a lighter purple than Oxalis 'Triangularis' that almost glows. We think this is indeed a very special selection. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08557

Oxalis regnellii 'Jade' PP 17,558 (Jade False Shamrock)

Oxalis regnellii 'Jade' PP 17,558 (Jade False Shamrock)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7-9, at least 8" tall Origin: S. America
Open House/Web-Only! (aka: Oxalis 'Jroxfroja') This wonderful new selection of the clumping (non-weedy) Oxalis regnellii comes from oxalis breeder Jozsef Retkes of Hungary. Oxalis 'Jade' has lovely pewter leaves on a 8" tall x 16" wide deciduous clump, topped in early spring and fall with bouquets of pure white flowers held just above the foliage...simply exquisite! Unfortunately, it was patented under the nonsensical cultivar name 'Jroxfroja', and sold under the invalid trademark name Charmed Jade...what marketing genius doesn't understand plant nomenclature and thinks an oxalis is patent-worthy? Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07117

Oxalis regnellii 'Mijke' (Purple Leaf False Shamrock)

Oxalis regnellii 'Mijke' (Purple Leaf False Shamrock)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7-10 8" tall Origin: S. America
Open House/Web-Only! Oxalis 'Mijke' is another of the great Oxalis regnellii cultivars that is similar to Oxalis regnellii 'Triangularis' except in the color of the leaf. Oxalis 'Triangularis' has a wide black edge to each purple leaf, while Oxalis 'Mijke' is missing the edge. The overall effect is a much brighter purple plant. From late spring through summer, the clumps are topped with mauve flowers held just above the foliage. In over 3 decades of growing this species, we have never had a single seedling. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05578

Oxalis regnellii 'Silverado' (Silverado False Shamrock)

Oxalis regnellii 'Silverado' (Silverado False Shamrock)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7-9, at least 6" tall Origin: S. America
Open House/Web-Only! We received this oxalis nearly two decades ago and have not been able to track down a name for this wonderful cultivar, so we have christened it as Oxalis 'Silverado'. The 1' wide dome-shaped clump emerges in spring with four-leaf clover leaves of olive, highlighted by a bright central silver pattern. The clumps are adorned with white flowers held just above the foliage in late summer and early fall. This is another of the non-weedy, slow growing members of the genus, which make great garden specimens. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07552

Oxalis regnellii 'Triangularis' (Purple and Black False Shamrock)

Oxalis regnellii 'Triangularis' (Purple and Black False Shamrock)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7-10, possibly colder 8" tall Origin: S. America
What a charmer! This clump-forming oxalis (not a weed...never seen a seed, indeed!) has deep, velvety purple leaves edged with a wide black border, topped by tiny, light pink flowers in summer...extremely cute! Purple shamrock is a dynamite plant to blend into the perennial border or woodland garden. Some of our Zone 6 customers claim to be growing this successfully through their winters. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00589

Pachysandra
Pachysandra terminalis 'Green Sheen' (Shiny Leaf Pachysandra)

Pachysandra terminalis 'Green Sheen' (Shiny Leaf Pachysandra)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 5-8 6" tall Origin: China
This hard-to-find pachysandra selection is a boon to gardeners in southern climates. With a spreading growth habit similar to P. terminalis, this selection developed by Dale Chapman and the University of Connecticut, loves the heat and humidity of the South, while other P. terminalis withers away. P. 'Green Sheen' has incredibly glossy, evergreen foliage (very disease & deer-resistant), as though just doused with a gallon of leaf shine. For covering the ground in a very shady or part sun location, this can't be beat. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02275

Paeonia
Paeonia 'Bartzella' (Bartzella Intersectional Peony)

Paeonia 'Bartzella' (Bartzella Intersectional Peony)

Sun to Part SunZone: 4-8, at least 36" tall Origin: Hybrid
Paeonia 'Bartzella' is the Rolls Royce of peonies, and we are thrilled to have enough of this splendid intersectional (herbaceous x tree) peony to share. This stunning deer-resistant hybrid goes dormant to ground level and buds like a herbaceous peony but has flowers and foliage like a tree peony. Developed by peony breeder Roger Anderson of Wisconsin, established clumps of P. 'Bartzella' can reach 3' tall x 3' wide with up to eighty 9" wide, fully double yellow flowers. The flowers don't fall over in the rain like herbaceous peonies, and their opening is staggered over a 6-week period. Our offerings are huge flowering-sized plants. Pot size: 2 Gal #07187
$90.00

Paeonia 'Blaze' (Blaze Peony)

Paeonia 'Blaze' (Blaze Peony)

SunZone: 3-8 26" tall Origin: Hybrid
NEW! In our 6-year peony trials, P. 'Blaze' has consistently been one of the most floriferous cultivars, producing up to 20 large, single, bright red flowers per clump. For us, this is an early-flowering deer-resistant selection, often opening in late April. Because of the flower size, staking may be helpful if rain is in your forecast when the flowers are fully open. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #08926
$24.00

Paeonia 'Cora Louise' (Cora Louise Intersectional Peony)

Paeonia 'Cora Louise' (Cora Louise Intersectional Peony)

SunZone: 4-8, at least 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
This 1986 introduction from Wisconsin breeder Roger Anderson combines the best of herbaceous peonies with the color, style, and sturdy stems of tree peonies. This intersectional hybrid makes a 2' tall clump, topped in May with huge 10" white flowers, highlighted by a dark maroon central pattern that lightens as it melds into the white body of the flower. Our intersectional peony offerings are all huge, deer-resistant, field-grown plants. Pot size: 2 Gal #07797
$110.00

Paeonia japonica (Japanese Peony)

Paeonia japonica (Japanese Peony)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-8 18" tall Origin: Japan
Unlike many of its more common and gaudy cousins, this demure woodland Japanese peony makes an 18" tall x 18" wide clump with grey-green foliage. In early spring, it is topped with lovely 3" wide white cups fading to a dark burgundy center with yellow stamens. After the flower, the pods split to reveal gorgeous metallic-blue seeds on red stalks. P. japonica is great as a deer-resistant specimen in the woodland garden or scattered throughout the shady perennial border. This is often mistakenly sold as P. ovata 'Alba'. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02397

This P. lactiflora hybrid boasts very sturdy 2' tall stems, topped in early May (NC) with dozens of large, 6" single white flowers, highlighted by the bright yellow stamens. P. 'Krinkled White' has proven to be one of the top low-chill, heat-tolerant, deer-resistant peonies in our trials...simply stunning! Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #06827

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 4-8, possibly colder 18" tall Origin: China, Japan    alternate image
We are thrilled to be able to offer one of the most sought-after plants for the woodland garden...the very rare Paeonia obovata. Similar to P. japonica, the stems of deer-resistant, grey-green foliage arise in late spring to 18". Topping the stems are marble-sized buds opening to lovely, single, dark rosy pink flowers in mid-May (NC). P. obovata is a great foliage textural contrast with hostas and ferns in the woodland garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02803

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 4-7, at least 20" tall Origin: China    alternate image
Open House/Web-Only! We are very excited to offer this little-known form of the prized woodland peony. Paeonia obovata ssp. obovata var. willmottiae hails from 8,000'+ on rocky slopes in the mountains of Hubei and Shaanxi provinces. Most of the material sold is Japanese in origin compared to this Chinese form. The deer-resistant variety willmottiae is much more vigorous than typical Paeonia ovata and is topped by single, white, cup-shaped flowers about 2 weeks earlier...early April in NC. This is in limited supply, so get them while they last. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #06277

SunZone: 4-8, at least 36" tall Origin: Hybrid
This 1996 Roger Anderson intersectional (herbaceous x tree peony) hybrid produces large 10" wide flowers that emerge pastel yellow, highlighted by prominent maroon blotches in the center. As the yellow flowers age, they become suffused with light pink from the petal tips and progress toward the center. Paeonia 'Pastel Splendor' makes a stunning 3' tall deer-resistant specimen with very sturdy stems, occasional reflowering, and great heat-tolerance thanks to its tree peony genes. Pot size: 2 Gal #07796
$110.00

Paeonia 'Raspberry Sundae' (C. Klehm 1968)

Paeonia 'Raspberry Sundae' (C. Klehm 1968)

SunZone: 4-8 30" tall Origin: Hybrid
NEW! Paeonia 'Raspberry Sundae' has been one of the most floriferous peonies in our trials, each clump producing over two dozen 30" flowering stems, starting in early May (NC). Each stem is topped with lovely bomb-type flowers composed of a flat layer of pink petals, topped with a dollop of fluffy white...resembling shaved ice cream. As the flowers age, the central white petals gradually turn pink from the top down...very nice! Although the stems are fairly sturdy, the flowers are quite heavy and, in the case of rain during the flowering period, some support is recommended. These are large, multi-eyed, flowering-sized deer-resistant plants. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #08973

If you have a full-sun garden, you need this peony and, yes, we frankly do give a damn. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #05652
