Neptune, Roman god of the seas, would no doubt be proud of this namesake. This Hans Hansen cross used the genetics of Hosta 'Maekawa', 'Halcyon', and 'Salute' to create an attention-drawing 2' tall x 4' wide clump of wave-like heavily-rippled long, pointed, rubbery blue leaves. This is one stunningly beautiful hosta! If you want to make visitors stop in their tracks and drop to their knees, here is the hosta for you. Finally, one of the most talked-about hostas of the last decade is available. This Hosta sieboldiana mutation essentially resembles a Hosta 'Frances Williams' without all of the unsightly blemishes on the golden part of the foliage. This recent Shady Oaks introduction takes "cute" to a whole new level. A sport of Hosta 'Baby Bunting', it is the tiniest variegated hosta in existence. The quarter-sized, rounded, blue-green leaves sport a large dollop of pure white in their centers. In midsummer, the clumps are topped with equally small stalks of tiny, light lavender flowers. We first discovered this sport of H. 'Blue Umbrellas' in 1999 and after years of trials, it just keeps getting better. In side by side trials with H. 'Singing in the Rain', H. 'Parasol' has more blue in the foliage and the edge is both wider and more cream than yellow. The 2' tall x 5' wide clumps are adorned with large metallic blue-green leaves, each bordered in creamy yellow. We find all of the H. 'Blue Umbrellas' sports to grow much larger in colder climates. I was blown away when I first saw this amazing Herb Benedict introduction at Hans Hansen's Minnesota garden. The striking 14" tall x 2' wide clump is composed of deeply veined, shiny, medium green leaves, edged with an exceptionally wide border of creamy yellow. Hosta 'Pot of Gold' is an all gold sport of Hosta 'Rainbow's End', which in turn is a sport of Hosta 'Obsession'. The narrow, glossy golden leaves form an attractive small 15" wide clump, topped in mid-July with 18" tall flower scapes that are heavily speckled purple. This 2007 Hans Hansen introduction comes from a cross of Hosta sieboldiana (streaked) x Hosta 'Fragrant Bouquet'. The resulting plant forms a 16" tall x 31" wide clump of 10" long pointed shiny golden leaves, which are brightest in spring. The base of the leaf petiole is also heavily speckled in red. The clumps are topped with 20" scapes of light lavender flowers in late summer.

Amazing! Perhaps we should call this the un-hosta, as Hosta 'Praying Hands' is the most un-hosta looking hosta to ever hit the market. Each small, 18" wide clump is composed of strangely folded, dark green crinkled leaves, each with a narrow creamy yellow border. Indeed a clump resembles a multitude of hands folded in prayer. This is our 1994 introduction, a seedling from Hosta kikutii caput-avis. The top of the foliage is medium green, with a thick white wax on the back of the leaves. In spring, the petioles are a wonderful, brilliant reddish-violet. The unique white flowers emerge sideways, making a ring of white around the 3' wide clump in late summer...great in sun!
