Trillium (Toad-shade, Wake Robin)
As more and more of our nursery seed-propagated trilliums reach flowering size, our offering of these great natives continue to expand. We now have nearly 10,000 plants in production, encompassing a range of southeast US native species. These easy-to-grow, woodland, spring ephemerals are a worldwide favorite, and they seem to exude a magical feeling when they blossom in the spring garden.
Trillium cuneatum coll. #A1NC-026 (Whippoorwill Toad Shade)

Trillium cuneatum coll. #A1NC-026 (Whippoorwill Toad Shade)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 5-8 10" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only! This is our first offering of Trillium cuneatum, seed propagated from an original collection from Oconee Co., SC. The sturdy 10" stems are topped with attractively mottled leaves, which are in turn topped with three liver-colored petals, starting in mid-March (NC). The non-offsetting T. cuneatum is an extremely easy and attractive species to cultivate in the woodland garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08582

Trillium foetidissimum (Foetid Trillium)

Trillium foetidissimum (Foetid Trillium)

Light ShadeZone: 5-9, at least 10" tall Origin: USA
Despite being endemic to only a small region of beech forests and floodplains on both the Louisiana and Mississippi sides of the Mississippi River, T. foetidissimum is as hardy in Minnesota. The amazing sessile trillium sprouts a 10" stalk in early spring, topped first with three olive-green leaves, dramatically highlighted with dark blotches. Atop the leaves are the narrow, maroon-red petals. T. foetidissimum is extremely easy to grow in a wide range of garden conditions. Our offering represents 5-year-old flowering-sized plants, grown from hand-pollinated seedlings here at PDN. The original parent clone for this offering was collected outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07103

Trillium lancifolium coll. #A1NC-059 (Lance Leaf Trillium)

Trillium lancifolium coll. #A1NC-059 (Lance Leaf Trillium)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 5-9, at least 6" tall Origin: USA
In 1998, we found this fast-multiplying form of Trillium lancifolium in Whitfield, Georgia, growing in a flooded, poison ivy-covered waste area behind a truck stop. We were able to secure a few divisions from the main clump and, finally, have enough flowering-sized seedlings to share. For us, this is one of the earliest, cutest, and also one of the smallest trilliums. The narrow, grey-green foliage is heavily speckled purple and topped by a typical liver-colored flower in late March and April in NC. This has proven to be very easy to grow in a dry woodland and quickly makes a wonderful clump. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05611
$22.00

Trillium maculatum coll. #A1NC-071 (Spotted Trillium)

Trillium maculatum coll. #A1NC-071 (Spotted Trillium)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 5-9 12" tall Origin: USA
This offering of the southeast native, Trillium maculatum, comes via PDN-grown seed from an original plant collected from a logged-over floodplain near the northern end of its range in Edgefield County, South Carolina. In the garden, these have been particularly vigorous and have developed nice offsetting clumps...very stunning in the spring garden. The olive-green foliage is nicely marked with liver-purple speckles, topped in early spring with upright purple petals. Moist soils are best, although T. maculatum is quite drought-tolerant when dormant. These are all flowering-sized plants and are 4-5 years old from seed. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06471

Trillium recurvatum (Bloody Nose Trilliums)

Trillium recurvatum (Bloody Nose Trilliums)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 4-8, at least 18" tall Origin: USA
We are thrilled to add another nursery-propagated trillium to our offerings...a Wisconsin form of Trillium recurvatum. This delightful native ranges from the Great Lakes south to Texas. The 18" tall stems are topped with three olive-green leaves, nicely mottled with liver-colored flecking. Between the leaves sits the blunt red flower, looking indeed like a bloody nose (late April in NC). This is an easy-to-grow species in the garden that offsets well. We have seen this in the wild growing in bogs with arisaema and in drier areas under large oaks. It does seem to prefer slightly more moist soils than most other trillium species. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05821
$24.00

Trillium recurvatum coll. #A3LA-072 (Bloody Nose Trillium)

Trillium recurvatum coll. #A3LA-072 (Bloody Nose Trillium)

Light ShadeZone: 5-9 10" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only! This superb form of Trillium recurvatum hails from our 2004 accession from Nacogdoches County in East Texas (355' elevation). These represent divisions from our original single rhizome, indicating the speed at which this form offsets. The foliage is heavily mottled silver and olive and is topped in late March (NC) with short dark purple flowers...a vigorous grower! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08684
$22.00

Trillium rugelii (Southern Nodding Trillium)

Trillium rugelii (Southern Nodding Trillium)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 4-8 15" tall Origin: USA
This fairly rare East Coast native, from NC to Alabama, is similar to the northern grown T. cernuum. In mid- to late-April, the nodding white flowers have contrasting purple floral parts. Although in the wild it occurs in moist, rich forests, it has grown well in our garden, and has multiplied nicely compared to many of the more commonly grown trilliums. This offering represents nursery-propagated divisions from our original rhizome, planted in 1994. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03095

Trillium underwoodii (Underwood's Trillium)

Trillium underwoodii (Underwood's Trillium)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-9 8" tall Origin: USA
This is a stunning Southeast native trillium from the dry deciduous forests of the Deep South region including Alabama, Georgia, and the Panhandle of Flordia. Despite this range, it has remarkable hardiness. The stunning, mottled foliage features a dark, medium, and light green checkerboard pattern with a silver streak down the center of each leaf. Emerging in February and March, each petiole is topped with a dark purple flower to 1" tall, contrasting nicely with the foliage. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02973

Trithrinax
Trithrinax campestris (Argentine Silver Palm)

Trithrinax campestris (Argentine Silver Palm)

SunZone: 8-10, at least 144" tall Origin: Argentina
Open House/Web-Only! I'll never forget the day I first saw these palms growing in open savannas in Northern Argentina in 2002...certainly the most beautiful palms I'd ever seen. The slow-growing trunks eventually reach 12' tall, clothed in very stiff leaves that ranged from grey to the most beautiful silver-grey you can imagine. We are pleased to offer 2-year-old seedlings for those looking to experiment. I expect them to show very good cold tolerance, but the key to winter survival in colder zones is to keep the plants dry since they are natives of dry desert regions. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05602

Typhonium
Typhonium roxburghii (Dwarf Voodoo Lily)

Typhonium roxburghii (Dwarf Voodoo Lily)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 7-10 12" tall Origin: Tropical Asia
Open House/Web-Only! (syn: T. blumei) "Honey...I shrunk the amorphophallus." Thanks to Jim Waddick for sharing this stunning and easy-to-grow little aroid that is completely unknown to all but the most devout plant geeks. The glossy green, hastate-shaped leaves emerge in June to make a small, 1' tall (with age) x 1' wide clump. After the leaves emerge, the clump begins producing flowers like a limp, dwarf Amorphophallus konjac, with an equally interesting aroma. This is a great specimen subject for the woodland garden. If you have neighbors that you hate, plant one near their open window for a great laugh! We previously offered this under the incorrect name of T. divaricatum. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02535
$12.00

Ulmus
Ulmus parvifolia 'Variegata' (Speckled Lacebark Elm)

Ulmus parvifolia 'Variegata' (Speckled Lacebark Elm)

SunZone: 5-8 360" tall Origin: China, Japan, Korea
Open House/Web-Only! This treasure is certainly the most asked-about tree at our Spring Open House. The first plant released (1qt) in Fall 2004 sold at the International Plant Propagators meeting for $140. This small/medium tree is adorned with small leaves, heavily speckled with white and dark green. We have found the growth rate to be between 4' and 6' per year when the plant is established and actively growing. As the plants age, the bark begins to peel, revealing a beautiful underlying tan-and-brown color pattern. The mature height should be in the range of 30' with a similar spread. We grow this from seed, so each plant is slightly different. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05866

Uvularia (Bellwort)
These cute little woodland natives have been overlooked during the "bigger-is-better" gardening fad. With gardens becoming smaller, along with the "back to nature" movement, folks are rediscovering these delightful members of the lily family. These woodland natives are great blending plants to mix with ferns and hostas. Their primary floral show is in early spring, although the structural foliage remains for the rest of the season.
Uvularia sessilifolia 'Cobblewood Gold' (Gold Edge Bellwort)

Uvularia sessilifolia 'Cobblewood Gold' (Gold Edge Bellwort)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 4-9 8" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only! Here is a neat, little-known selection of an old East Coast native, discovered by plantsman Darrell Probst in a patch of woods in western Massachusetts. In early spring, the tiny stalks of this lily emerge from a short underground rhizome. The wiry, 8" tall stems are clothed with small green leaves, each with a delightful golden border. Each stem ends with a small, yellow, bell-shaped flower in early spring. In 10 years, expect a 2' wide mass of stems...great for a special spot in the woodland garden! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03100

Verbena (Vervain)
Here is a plant group that has come a long way! These butterfly magnets give new meaning to the words summer color (many bloom all summer). These full sun-lovers tolerate drought well but revel with irrigation. The more moisture, the faster they spread and the better they flower. Not only are they great in the ground, but they also make stunning container plants or tender perennials in northerly zones. While true V. canadensis only flowers prolifically in spring and fall, the hybrids make a stunning show all summer. For best hardiness, don't plant after mid-September from Zone 8 north. Also, established clumps should be cut back to basal (on the ground) foliage in early-to-mid-September. This will allow good rooting in the ground, which will better survive winter weather.
Verbena 'Blue Princess' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Blue Princess' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
This verbena hybrid from England came to us via plant explorer Greg Grant of Texas. The large, blue-purple flower heads (RHS 87A) exude a terrific fragrance...sort of like those expensive QVC perfumes. This is one of the most exciting verbenas in color, fragrance, and foliage I've ever seen...FABULOUS! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01945
$11.00

Verbena bonariensis (Verbena on a Stick)

Verbena bonariensis (Verbena on a Stick)

SunZone: 7-10 30" tall Origin: S. America
This is the ultimate perennial for both experienced perennial border designers as well as beginning gardeners. The blue-purple (RHS 82A), large marble-sized, branched flower clusters are borne all summer on 30" tall stalks above the narrow see-through foliage. V. bonariensis (Latin for Buenos Aires) is great in the garden or in flower arrangements. In good soils, you will find a few seedlings scattered around the garden making their own combinations! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01144
$11.00

Verbena 'Fiesta' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Fiesta' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! I'll bet you have never seen anything like this new verbena from Greg Grant. The large bright pink flowers (RHS 57A) have flecks of purple in each flower that intensify with age. This has proven to be a vigorous grower that flowers continuously from spring through fall. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01146
$11.00

Verbena 'Homestead Purple' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Homestead Purple' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 6-10 8" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! This wonderful verbena was discovered by the Georgia Gang (Dirr and Armitage) at...where else...an old homestead. This vigorous grower is literally covered with medium dark purple flowers backed by clean, dark green foliage all summer...WOW! V. 'Homestead Purple' can leap small plants in a single bound, so be careful to only use it in the proper place...large expanses like service stations and interstate medians, or to cover junked cars. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01150

Verbena 'Hot Lips' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Hot Lips' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! The flowers on this dazzling new verbena from Texan Greg Grant are probably the most brilliant we have seen. The large flower heads of fluorescent red-violet (RHS 74A) darken toward the center of each floret, giving a three-dimensional appearance to the flowers. From late spring until the end of summer, the patch is topped with masses of flowers...great for designers who enjoy bold color combinations! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04217
$11.00

Verbena 'Mabel's Maroon' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Mabel's Maroon' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! I picked up this hot little number on a recent trip to Texas (don't tell my wife). V. 'Mabel's Maroon' is one of the most unique colors we have seen in a verbena...sort of a fluorescent maroon (RHS 71A). You can easily imagine this Texas verbena's tolerance to intense heat and sun. Expect heavy flowering from midspring into early fall. "Mabel" does not have the vigor of V. 'Homestead Purple' and therefore may be easier to use in combination with other plants. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03539
$11.00

Verbena 'Mystic' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Mystic' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10, at least 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! We are pleased to introduce a new hardy verbena that first appeared here as a hybrid seedling between V. 'Blue Princess' and V. tenuisecta 'Michelle'. The result is an airy, amazingly vigorous cutleaf verbena that is topped, virtually all year, with light lavender flower clusters (RHS 87C). I should qualify "vigorous," in that it is nothing like the often-voracious V. 'Homestead Purple'. If you're looking for a great garden performer, I think you will be pleased with V. 'Mystic'. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04793
$11.00

Verbena peruviana (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena peruviana (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 6-10 1" tall Origin: Argentina, Brazil
This verbena species is a very low grower, perfect for a sunny rock wall. In 2002, we saw this growing in the wild at the base of the Argentine tree cactus in the dry mountains of northern Argentina. V. peruviana has tiny leaves and is smothered with brilliant, true red flowers (RHS 45A) from spring through summer. More water...more flowers. You will need sunglasses when you look at this one too long...very bright! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01154
$11.00

Verbena 'Princess Bride' (Princess Bride Verbena)

Verbena 'Princess Bride' (Princess Bride Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10, at least 12" tall Origin: Hybrid
We were shocked to find that our Verbena 'Blue Princess' engaged in an after-hours unprotected liaison, not far from the nearby Juniper Level Baptist Church. Not only does the princess's offspring have good blood, but it's also a stellar performer. Our original clump reaches 1' in height to 3-4' in width and is topped from June until frost with 2" flower heads of medium pink (RHS 66D), lightly fragrant flowers, each highlighted with a dark maroon center (RHS 74A). There were other offspring from the rendezvous, but so far, no others have measured up to the royal family standards. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06646
$11.00

Verbena 'Snowflurry' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Snowflurry' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 5-8 12" tall Origin: USA
New crop available 12-3-2009 (formerly sold as V. canadensis 'White') This is the most popular verbena we have ever offered! This semi-upright, white-flowered verbena is a virtual flowering machine. Our plant has not been out of flower in the last 2 years, with the heaviest flowering in spring and fall...it also comes true from seed. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01148
SOLD OUT

'Summer Blaze' keeps flowering and flowering and flowering...well, you get the picture. You will love the brilliant, clear-red flowers (RHS 45A) on this vigorous verbena. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01155

From early spring until frost, it is topped with hundreds of coral pink flowers (RHS 57A)...a true lover of hot weather. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01159
$11.00

Verbena tenuisecta 'Decked Out' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena tenuisecta 'Decked Out' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! This amazing verbena appeared as a seedling near our back deck; hence, the name. V. 'Decked Out' has sailed through our miserable winters in great shape and rewards us with a constant show of rich, fluorescent purple flowers all summer. The non-aggressive habit makes it perfect for fun "plant marriages." Oh sorry, I forgot the courts ruled that those weren't legal, but they can still cohabitate in all states except South Carolina. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05423
$11.00

Verbena tenuisecta 'Tatted Lace' (Perennial Verbena)

The flowers fade from bright pink to white, creating a stunning effect. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01327
