Tradescantia (Spiderwort)
We are delighted that someone has finally taken an interest in breeding these indestructible garden plants. With many native species to work with and their ability to grow in full sun or dark shade, it is amazing that so little work has been done with the spiderworts. Dr. Kevin Vaughn, a renowned hosta, iris, and daylily breeder, has been focusing his recent efforts on the world of spiderworts. These new hybrids have been selected for a longer blooming season, better foliage, better vigor, and overall, more attractive plants. We hope you will enjoy these new offerings.
Tradescantia 'Maiden's Blush' (Maiden's Blush Spiderwort)

Tradescantia 'Maiden's Blush' (Maiden's Blush Spiderwort)

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 8-10 8" tall Origin: unknown
(aka: T. 'Blushing Bride', 'First Blush') Thanks to Larry Hatch of the New Ornamentals Society, we now have the correct name of T. 'Maiden's Blush'. A case of identity theft made it difficult to track down the correct name. It is not reliably hardy north of Zone 8, unless you live in Al Gore's world, despite being listed as Zone 4 in most catalogs. Of course, from Al's point of view, Zone 4 ain't what it used to be, so give it a try. This very cool tradescantia (a still-unidentified species) makes a stunning groundcover or hanging basket of 1" wide, green foliage. In early spring, the new growth emerges with a stunning white-and-pink blush that holds most of the summer...showstopping! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02414

Tradescantia sillamontana 'Hogan's Hero' (Cobweb Spiderwort)

Tradescantia sillamontana 'Hogan's Hero' (Cobweb Spiderwort)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 8-10, at least 10" tall Origin: Mexico
This native spiderwort comes from a Sean Hogan collection about 80 miles northwest of Sierra La Pena in Coahuila, Mexico at 6,500' elevation. T. sillamontana 'Hogan's Hero' makes a delightful garden plant in addition to a great hanging basket specimen. The tight greenish foliage which is covered in thick white hairs, clasps the fleshy stems to form a 10" tall x 18" wide clump. In late summer, the stalks are adorned with small lavender flowers, but you're growing this gem for the foliage. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05631

Tradescantia 'Sweet Kate' (Golden Spiderwort)

Tradescantia 'Sweet Kate' (Golden Spiderwort)

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-8 12" tall Origin: USA Hybrid    alternate image
(syn: T. 'Blue and Gold') This import from the UK is taking the gardening world by storm! Discovered in the garden of Mrs. Stevens of Rusthall, Kent, it was named after her blond-haired daughter Kate Stevens. The brilliant golden foliage (brightest in full sun) is highlighted with a procession of deep blue flowers from late spring until fall. If flowering slows, behead the plant...and it, just like an alien, will start to regrow and flower all over again. Each plant is a true masterpiece! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04209

Tremacron
Tremacron aurantiacum (Golden Tremacron)

Tremacron aurantiacum (Golden Tremacron)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7-8, at least 2" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only! Let me guess, you've never heard of tremacron? This endemic genus of Chinese gesneriads contains only seven species. We have been thrilled at how easy this has been to grow in a lightly shaded rock garden...ours are growing in a well-drained but slightly moist site. The small, tight rosette of hairy, crinkled, dark green leaves makes a 2" tall x 6" wide rosette, topped in early September with 6" tall dainty flower spikes ending in small yellow flowers...very cute! Our plants don't quite match the descriptions of any of the known species, but this ID is the best we can do for now. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07579
$14.00

Tricyrtis (Toad Lily)
Toad lilies are sort of like Smuckers® jellies...with a name like that, they gotta be good. For late summer and fall flowering in a woodland or light shade garden, there is nothing better. In late summer, they burst open with orchid-like blooms that last almost until frost in some varieties. We feature some new varieties this year, with many more exciting ones in the future.
Tricyrtis formosana 'Autumn Glow' (Autumn Glow Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis formosana 'Autumn Glow' (Autumn Glow Toad Lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 6-9, possibly colder 24" tall Origin: Japan
This stunning new Japanese selection of Taiwanese T. formosana boasts a wide yellow border around the dark green leaves...the widest and most dramatic edge on any of the other variegated T. formosana selections we have grown. The 2' tall stalks make a large patch, 3' wide in 3 years, topped, starting in early July (NC), with clusters of orchid-like amethyst-purple flowers with dark spots. T. formosana will not perform well in deep shade and really prefers a couple of hours of sun for best growth. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06928
$14.00

Tricyrtis formosana 'Emperor' (Emperor Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis formosana 'Emperor' (Emperor Toad Lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 6-9 12" tall Origin: Japan
Open House/Web-Only! Variegated plant nuts read on...this new PDN introduction boasts bright golden foliage, with each leaf surrounded by a nice creamy-white edge. T. 'Emperor' is a slightly stoloniferous species that will make a nice patch, especially when grown in a slightly moist woodland location. In midsummer, the clumps are topped with 1" wide, dark purple speckled, orchid-like flowers. T. 'Emperor' makes a bright beacon in an otherwise dark woodland! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03864
$14.00

Tricyrtis hirta 'Golden Gleam' (Golden Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis hirta 'Golden Gleam' (Golden Toad Lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-9 18" tall Origin: Japan
Years after its 1996 introduction from Terra Nova, Tricyrtis 'Golden Gleam' is still one of our favorite toad lilies...even if it never flowered. This dwarf only reaches 18" with chartreuse golden foliage spotted with large grey dots, that looks great all summer in the woodland garden when used among textural contrasts like ferns and carex. In fall, each leaf axil is tightly packed with 1" wide dark purple and white-speckled flowers...a great collectors' plant for the woodland rock garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01758
$16.00

Tricyrtis hirta 'Minazuki' (Minazuki Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis hirta 'Minazuki' (Minazuki Toad Lily)

Light ShadeZone: 4-8 20" tall Origin: Japan
Open House/Web-Only! Tricyrtis 'Minazuki' (not to be confused with 'Miyazaki') is a delightful selection of the hairless T. hirta var. masamunei from Kyushu, Japan. Narrow golden leaves adorn the 20" stems. As the summer progresses, the leaves develop a thin green border along with a few green streaks in the leaves. Starting in September (NC), the plants are adorned with pale lavender flowers, both terminally and in the leaf axils. T. 'Minazuki' is the more stable form of the highly streaked T. 'Lightning Strike'. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06183
$16.00

Tricyrtis hirta 'Miyazaki' (Miyazaki Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis hirta 'Miyazaki' (Miyazaki Toad Lily)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 4-8 24" tall Origin: Japan
Tricyrtis hirta 'Miyazaki' is a strain of the Japanese native T. hirta that was selected for its shorter, more arching habit than the typical species. In late summer and early fall, the 1" purple-and-white spotted orchid-like flowers burst forth in the leaf axils. Slightly moist soils are best, although T. hirta can endure extended droughts by diminishing its flower production. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01510
$12.00

Tricyrtis lasiocarpa (Amethyst Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis lasiocarpa (Amethyst Toad Lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7-9 36" tall Origin: Taiwan
Open House/Web-Only! (aka: T. formosana 'Amethystina') This is one of the most spectacular toad lilies for warmer climates. In the wilds of Taiwan, we saw this growing atop rock cliffs in nearly full sun, reinforcing our experience that this is not a deep shade lover. T. lasiocarpa makes a tight clump of 3' tall, upright, ladder-like stems clothed with glossy, green and purple speckled foliage. From midsummer until early fall, the clump is topped with multiple-branched, large, terminal sprays of 1" white, orchid-like flowers with tips of amethyst and blue. This toad lily was originally introduced by John Elsley of Wayside Gardens under the incorrect name, T. formosana 'Amethystina' (an extinct clone of the running species). Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01050
$14.00

Tricyrtis latifolia 'Golden Leopard' (Golden Leopard Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis latifolia 'Golden Leopard' (Golden Leopard Toad Lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 4-7 24" tall Origin: Japan
I first saw the superb Tricyrtis latifolia extensively used in the early 1990s at a Minnesota hosta convention and was amazed how unavailable it was in the commercial trade. Tricyrtis latifolia is one of only two non-dwarf upright growing, yellow-flowering species of toad lily...the other being the Chinese T. puberula. T. latifolia 'Golden Leopard' makes a sturdy upright stalk to 2' tall, adorned with glossy green leaves that don't overlap the stem as they do in T. puberula. Starting in early June, T. latifolia is topped with open panicles of upward-facing butter-yellow flowers, each highlighted with small brown spots. Hailing from Northern Honshu, T. latifolia does not appreciate long periods of excessive heat and performs much better in northern climates. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07498

Open House/Web-Only! This Darrell Probst introduction is a cross between two dwarf Japanese yellow-flowered species, T. flava and T. ohsumiensis. The result is a vigorous hybrid with large, light green, speckled leaves that form a robust 1' tall x 1' wide clump. The clumps are topped, starting in early October, with large, light yellow flowers. In form, it is taller than T. 'Moonlight Treasure'. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06541

Tricyrtis 'Moonlight Treasure' PP 16,037, PVR (Moonlight Treasure Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis 'Moonlight Treasure' PP 16,037, PVR (Moonlight Treasure Toad Lily)

Light ShadeZone: 5-7, at least 10" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! Tricyrtis 'Moonlight Treasure' is a new hybrid, created using the beautiful dwarf species T. ohsumiensis and T. nana. The result is a stunning new compact hybrid comprised of thick, beautifully blotched leaves forming a compact 10" tall x 10" wide clump. Starting in late summer, the clumps are topped with large, buttery-yellow flowers held just above the foliage. This is a breeding breakthrough that you are sure to love! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05644

Tricyrtis ohsumiensis 'Nakatsugawa' (The N-Word Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis ohsumiensis 'Nakatsugawa' (The N-Word Toad Lily)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 4-7, at least 8" tall Origin: Japan
Oh, my! I can't remember how many times I repeated those words when I first saw this amazing toad lily. Usually a plant this beautiful proves equally as difficult to grow, but not so with T. 'Nakatsugawa'. The wide, creamy white borders highlight the succulent, light green leaves to the point that, who cares about flowers. Visitors are constantly mistaking it for a choice hosta. The 10" tall clump is topped in early fall with large, butter-yellow flowers...almost too much beauty for one plant. Propagation is painfully slow; hence, the high price. This selection comes from Garden Chicory Nursery in the city of Nakatsugawa, Japan. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05897
$40.00

Tricyrtis perfoliata (Perfoliate Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis perfoliata (Perfoliate Toad Lily)

Light ShadeZone: 5-7a 6" tall Origin: Japan
Open House/Web-Only! This rare Japanese endemic hails from the moist cliffs of the Nanuki River on Japan's Kyushu Island. T. perfoliata is one of several weeping toad lily species, but is the only one that has upfacing open flowers (like T. flava) instead of the bell-like flowers of T. ishiana and T. macrantha. The 2-3' long arching stem passes through the ends (perfoliate) of the glossy green leaves. The stems are then laden with a stunning show of 1.5" wide axillary yellow flowers in late summer/early fall...truly stunning. This is not a great specimen for regions with hot, dry summers. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06929
$22.00

Tricyrtis 'Sinonome' (Sinonome Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis 'Sinonome' (Sinonome Toad Lily)

Light ShadeZone: 5-9 36" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! Tricyrtis 'Sinonome' was rated one of the top toad lilies in the extensive perennial trials at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. It performs equally as well for us in the land of heat and humidity as it does in the cold windy city. The 3' tall upright stems of this T. hirta x T. formosana hybrid are clothed with leaves from bottom to top. In late summer, the top of the stems are home to nice clusters of 1" purple and white speckled flowers. Slightly moist soils are preferred, but T. 'Sinonome' is quite drought-tolerant once established...a great addition to the woodland garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04411
$14.00

Tricyrtis 'Taipei Silk' PPAF (Taipei Silk Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis 'Taipei Silk' PPAF (Taipei Silk Toad Lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 6-8, at least 30" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only! This delightful new tricyrtis hybrid comes from the breeding program of Darrell Probst. The 30" tall stalks of this T. lasiocarpa hybrid are clothed with glossy green leaves, then topped, starting in September, with five-way branched terminal sprays of 1.5 inch wide flowers. Each flower is composed of three rich lavender petals contrasted with three smaller white petals with lavender specks. T. 'Taipei Silk' is a great addition to the fall garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07426
$14.00

Tricyrtis 'Tojen' (Tojen Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis 'Tojen' (Tojen Toad Lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-8 24" tall Origin: Japan
Open House/Web-Only! (aka: T. 'Togen') If you like toad lilies, you are going to love this robust and easy-to-grow Japanese hybrid...perfect for moist or slightly dry shade. The gigantic foliage is nearly three times as large as most of the other tricyrtis species and remains looking good all summer. T. 'Tojen' forms a massive 2' tall x 3' wide clump, topped, starting in midsummer, with terminal clusters of unspotted orchid lavender and white flowers with yellow throats...a BIG WOW! Unlike other toad lilies that seed a bit, this one takes after its condom namesake and will leave you with no unwanted offspring. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01462
$14.00

Tricyrtis 'White Waves' PPAF (White Waves Toad Lily)

Tricyrtis 'White Waves' PPAF (White Waves Toad Lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 6-8, at least 15" tall Origin: Hybrid
This new toad lily is one that we found hiding amongst our stock of Tricyrtis 'Imperial Banner'. While similar to its parent, T. 'White Waves' has none of the green streaking in the middle of the creamy central part of the leaf. This results in a more dramatic leaf variegation but slightly less vigor. For us, the 15" tall clumps are topped in early October with attractive purple-spotted flowers...very stunning! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07228
$20.00
