Hosta (Hosta)
These natives, mostly to prairies (some in woods) of China, Japan, and Korea, have been grown in America for over 150 years. Currently, there are nearly 6,000 cultivars available in the trade. Of these, probably 500 actually are distinct and garden-worthy. During the last few years, the quality and quantity of new hosta introductions has risen substantially. We continually work with the country's best breeders to evaluate new introductions, and we choose to sell only those we feel represent the very best. For the best performance, hostas prefer light shade to a couple of hours of sun in the morning. The further south you move, the more moisture will be required to grow the size hostas that are prevalent in the North. Good soil preparation is also a key to growing a hosta well. Our plants are all container-grown and are usually multiple-division plants...our price is for an entire container of 1-20 divisions. We do not offer small, recently propagated plants and challenge other nurserymen to do the same. We know you will be pleased with our quality; we hope you will also be pleased with our selection and prices. When hostas are divided under nursery conditions, they often take on immature leaf characteristics including more pointed leaves as well as reduced cupping and corrugation. These leaf forms that are pictured and described will re-develop in one to two growing seasons...don't be alarmed.

Hosta 'Pandora's Box' (H. Hansen/Shady Oaks 98)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-7 3" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
This recent Shady Oaks introduction takes "cute" to a whole new level. A sport of H. 'Baby Bunting', it is the tiniest variegated hosta in existence. The quarter-sized, rounded, blue-green leaves sport a large dollop of pure white in their centers. In midsummer, the clumps are topped with equally small stalks of tiny, light lavender flowers. This is not a plant for those who neglect their plants and should only be grown by serious collectors who will lavish attention on this tiny gem...for the rock or trough garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03002

Hosta 'Parasol' (T. Avent NR)
Light Shade Zone: 3-7a 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
We first discovered this sport of H. 'Blue Umbrellas' in 1999 and after years of trials, it just keeps getting better. In side by side trials with H. 'Singing in the Rain', H. 'Parasol' has more blue in the foliage and the edge is both wider and more cream than yellow. The 2' tall x 5' wide clumps are adorned with large metallic blue-green leaves, each bordered in creamy yellow. We find all of the H. 'Blue Umbrellas' sports to grow much larger in colder climates. The clumps are topped with 32" scapes of lavender flowers in early summer. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #07947

This is one of those rare hostas that stands out in any garden...AWESOME! Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #00515

This unique small hosta makes a 6" tall x 1' wide clump of small but heavily corrugated round leaves, each creamy white with a dark blue-green border. Hosta 'Percy' (H. Benedict NR)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-8 14" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
I was blown away when I first saw this amazing Herb Benedict introduction at Hans Hansen's Minnesota garden. The striking 14" tall x 2' wide clump is composed of deeply veined, shiny, medium green leaves, edged with an exceptionally wide border of creamy yellow. This is a stunning specimen hosta in the garden...best sited where it can have a bit of morning sun. Herb named this hosta after a favorite former teacher, Percy Stough. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #07237

Hosta 'Pewterware' (D. Dean 99)
Light Shade Zone: 3-8 8" tall Origin: Hybrid
It's not often that a breakthrough hosta comes along, so pardon me if I get excited. This Don Dean hybrid (H. 'Urajiro Hachijo' x H. 'Blue Moon') takes the color blue to a whole new intensity and duration. For us, H. 'Pewterware' has unique, intensely waxy blue leaves, whose color holds nearly all summer in the South. The 2' wide clumps are topped in very late summer with 18" scapes of light lavender flowers. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #05885

Hosta plantaginea (China species)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-9 20" tall Origin: China    alternate image
This very heat-tolerant species from China is noted not only for its shiny, light green foliage, but for its 6" long, deliciously fragrant, white flowers. Beginning in August, the flowers, which open in late afternoon, could make any garden a fragrant oasis. Each clump reaches 40" wide on this great candidate for a mixed border. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #01065

Hosta plantaginea var. japonica (Chinese species)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-9 24" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only!
We have enjoyed this unique selection of Hosta plantaginea since the late Dr. Herb Benedict shared it with us in 1993, and we finally have enough to share with you. Our 2' tall x 4' wide clump is composed of glossy, light green leaves that are much longer and narrower than typical H. plantaginea. The typical large, white, fragrant H. plantaginea-like flowers top the clump in August. In the genus Hosta, Schmid indicates that this form arrived in Japan from China in the 1800s. Why has it taken so long to become readily available? Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #02084

Hosta 'Popcorn' (E. Lachman 99)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-7 12" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
We love this Eleanor Lachman introduction, which we coveted (a secret just between you and me) after visiting her Massachusetts garden in 1998. The 2' wide clump is composed of thick, cupped blue leaves, each highlighted by a large, round creamy pattern in the center. In late spring, the clump is topped with a 2' stalk of pale lavender flowers. This is one of the most unique hostas we grow. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #05465

Hosta 'Pot of Gold' is an all gold sport of Hosta 'Rainbow's End', which in turn is a sport of Hosta 'Obsession'. The narrow, glossy golden leaves form an attractive small 15" wide clump, topped in mid-July with 18" tall flowers scapes that are heavily speckled purple. The purple flower buds that open pinkish-lavender and the accompanying purple-tinged vestigial leaves are a nice color contrast to the bright gold foliage. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #07398

Hosta 'Praying Hands' (G. Williams 96)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-8 14" tall Origin: Hybrid
Amazing! Perhaps we should call this the un-hosta, as Hosta 'Praying Hands' is the most un-hosta looking hosta to ever hit the market. Each small, 18" wide clump is composed of strangely folded, dark green crinkled leaves, each with a narrow creamy yellow border. Indeed a clump resembles a multitude of hands folded in prayer. Due to First Amendment concerns, it cannot be planted near courthouses in Alabama or near any Federal government building. The upright clumps are topped with 18" spikes of light lavender flowers in late summer. This sets a new standard for "unique" in the hosta world. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #04605

Hosta 'Queen of the Sea' (M. Seaver 01)
Light Shade Zone: 3-8 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
Hosta 'Queen of the Sea' made everyone at the 1997 American Hosta Society Convention drool with envy as it took Best in Show honors. Finally, one of nonagenarian Mildred Seaver's most sought-after gems has made its debut into commercial production, and we are delighted to be able to offer this treasure. The 4' wide clumps of heavily pie-crusted, pointed, blue-green leaves form an architectural clump. In midsummer, the clumps are topped with 3' spikes of lavender flowers. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #06457

Hosta rectifolia 'Fujibotan' (Gotemba NR)
Light Shade Zone: 3-8 20" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
H. 'Fujibotan' is a very rare selection of H. rectifolia (incorrectly identified in Japan as H. montana) that was discovered by Kenji Watanabe of Japan's Gotemba Nursery on the slopes of Mount Fuji. Often selling in Japan for more than a good used car, we are making you a deal you can't refuse. The highlight of the small, 2' wide, green leaf clump is the dramatic, fully double lavender flowers atop 4' tall stalks...a truly exquisite sight when it flowers in late summer. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #03875

Hosta 'Restless Sea' (H. Hansen 06)
Light Shade Zone: 3-8, at least 17" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
This Hans Hansen hybrid of Hosta 'Salute' is certainly one of the most recognizable hostas in the garden. The upright, grey-green, twisty leaves also have rippled edges and serrated leaf margins, helping this accessory-packed hosta form a truly unique and fascinating 17" tall x 32" wide clump. The clumps are topped with 2' tall spikes of light lavender flowers in late August to early September. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #07801

Hosta 'Risky Business' (H. Hansen/T. Avent 02)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-8 20" tall Origin: Hybrid
Boy, has this hosta caused quite a commotion with those who have seen it in person! This mutation of the wildly popular H. 'Striptease' boasts a pure white center (that holds all season) instead of the yellow center of its parent. Possessing the same incredible vigor, it forms a dense 2' wide clump in short order. In midsummer, the clumps are topped with 2' tall scapes of violet flowers. Chalk this one up to the "winner" category! Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #04270

Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-8, at least 16" tall Origin: Hybrid

This Hosta 'Abba Irresistible' sport comes from Michigan's Ken Ziarek. Each 16" tall x 26" wide clump is composed of shiny green leaves, each highlighted by a dramatic creamy white central blotch. H. 'Rootin Tootin' has much more vigor than its parent, but is still best where it can get an hour or two of sun during the cool morning hours. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #07807

Hosta 'Roy Klehm' PPAF (H. Hansen 07)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-8 21" tall Origin: Hybrid
Hans Hansen created this tetraploid sport of Hosta 'Summer Serenade' (a sport of H. 'Piedmont Gold') and named it after our friend and great nurseryman, Roy Klehm. Hosta 'Roy Klehm' makes a 21" tall x 2' wide clump of large dark green leaves, highlighted by a wide central pattern of bright gold and topped in early summer with stalks of white flowers. Just like Roy, his namesake hosta will brighten a large area. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #08328
