Hemerocallis (Daylily)
While we have long enjoyed daylilies in our garden, until recently we have declined to offer them through the catalog due to the proliferation of specialty daylily nurseries. Realizing that many daylilies are now hybridized for show flowers, we have decided to make available some of the distinctive, garden-worthy hybrids as well as a number of the naturally-occurring species. We hope you will enjoy our limited but carefully chosen selections. Daylilies love full sun but grow surprisingly well in some part-sun situations. We have also found that daylilies truly prosper when grown in a rich, damp site.

Hemerocallis 'August Flame' (Woods 68)
Sun Zone: 3-9 40" tall Origin: Hybrid
In August, when most daylilies are just a memory, there are a few that stand alone...in full flower. One of our favorites is the '60s hybrid (you remember the '60s...free love, ban the bomb, get outta 'Nam), H. 'August Flame'. From mid-July through August, the 3-4' tall flower stalks are topped with clusters of large, bright red flowers, each centered with a dramatic yellow-orange blotch. Because of its height and late season of flowering, H. 'August Flame' is an excellent choice for the perennial border. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04323

Hemerocallis 'Black Eyed Susan' (Stevens 83)
Sun Zone: 3-9 28" tall Origin: Hybrid
With well over 150 different daylilies growing in our garden, Hemerocallis 'Black Eyed Susan' is at the top of our list every year. This amazing tetraploid daylily blooms for a long period of time in the south, starting in June (NC) and reportedly re-blooms well in the north. The 28" tall stalks are topped with 5" wide brilliant golden flowers, each highlighted by a contrasting wide red central blotch. Every year I think we must offer this great daylily, so finally, here it is. Give this a special spot in the garden!
Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08551

Hemerocallis 'Challenger' (Stout 49)
Sun Zone: 3-9 72" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
This amazing old Stout hybrid sends flowering scapes into the stratosphere before opening in midsummer. Each 6' tall flower stem is home to clusters of large, spidery, bright red flowers. Each flower has a large central pattern of yellow-orange and a matching streak that runs to the end of each petal. Because of the exceptional height, we use this in the middle and back of the perennial border...a true stunner! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04322

Hemerocallis citrina 'Yao Ming' (Yao Ming Daylily)
Sun Zone: 5-9, at least 60" tall Origin: China
When we acquired this from China as H. multiflora, we didn't know what to expect, but were rewarded with an amazing daylily. In midsummer, this gem produces 5' tall flower spikes that are well-branched toward the tip and topped with large, golden yellow, sweetly fragrant flowers that open in the afternoon. The long bloom time, sturdy stems and great branching make this a superb garden specimen. Unfortunately, it doesn't match H. multiflora, but more closely resembles a superb giant form of H. citrina, hence the name commorating another well-branched giant from China. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06875

Hemerocallis 'Forsyth White Buds' (W. LeFever 95)
Sun Zone: 3-9 26" tall Origin: Hybrid
NEW!
This splendid daylily comes from the hybridizing work of NC plantsman Wyatt LeFever. The 26" tall stalks are topped with balloon-like white buds that open to a brilliant red flower, highlighted by a golden throat. H. 'Forsyth White Buds' starts flowering for us in late June and continues for a while, thanks to numerous side buds...one of our favorites. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08666

Hemerocallis 'Freewheelin' (P. Stamile 05)
Sun Zone: 6-9, at least 34" tall Origin: Hybrid
This wild tetraploid daylily comes from the Stamile's breeding program in Florida. H. 'Freewheelin' has been quite the attention getter in our garden with a long blooming period during which the 34" tall, 6-way branched flower scape produces up to 50 large spider-like flowers. Each flower starts with a large central eye zone of chartreuse, outlined with a wide band of red and then ending with bright yellow petal tips. This is truly a stunning evergreen daylily. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08552

Hemerocallis 'Gold Dust' (Tax Day) (Gold Dust Daylily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 4-9 18" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
Thanks to a customer, we have a name for this 1913 heirloom daylily hybrid, Hemerocallis 'Gold Dust'. The interspecific cross of Hemerocallis dumortieri and H. flava comes from the late George Yeld of England. This is the first daylily to think about flowering in our garden, starting shortly after tax day and continuing into early May in NC. The short flower stalks are topped with bright orange, very fragrant flowers with dark brown stained backs. For the early season, this is a wonderful daylily that we wouldn't garden without! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07524

Hemerocallis 'Golden Zebra' PP 14,221 (J. Malan 94)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 5-9, at least 12" tall Origin: Hybrid
(syn: H. 'Malja') Over the years, I've seen many variegated seedlings, but there is finally a stable variegated daylily. In 1989, South Africa's Jacques Malan grew seed that he had purchased as miniature hybrid daylilies. One of the seedlings was variegated, and the result is a dwarf daylily with dramatic foliage...green leaves with a wide, creamy white border. I really don't care if it ever flowers, but just the same, the 1' tall clump is adorned with single orange flowers in late spring, reminiscent of H. dumortieri. The plant was first introduced in 1994 in South Africa as H. 'Golden Zebra'. The name was improperly changed to the invalid name H. 'Malja' and then incorrectly accepted by the US Patent Office. (Please buy those folks a copy of The International Code of Nomenclature.) Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06252

Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus (Night Blooming Daylily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 4-9 40" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only!
Unfortunately, the newer "flower show" hybrid daylilies have gone far from their origin. This native Chinese species is truly one of my garden favorites. In July, the clump of H. lilioasphodelus by our deck puts out 3-4' bloom scapes topped with dozens of very fragrant, narrow-petaled, lemony-yellow flowers...that's right...fragrant! The flowers open in early evening and close early the following morning, making them perfect for those that like to enjoy their garden at night after a long day at the office or for insomniacs who tire of the Psychic Friends Network. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03170

Hemerocallis 'Notify Ground Crew' (C. Hanson 00)
Sun Zone: 3-8, at least 72" tall Origin: Hybrid
This 2000 H. citrina hybrid from Ohio's Curt Hanson (which originally sold for $100+) makes a statement in any garden. The masses of 6' tall branched flower stalks begin opening in late June to reveal large, yellow, fragrant, nocturnal (opens around 4pm) flowers. Shouldn't we all be looking up to daylilies? I think so!
Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07549

Hemerocallis 'Secured Borders' (W. Przypek 05)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 3-9 12" tall Origin: Hybrid
After years of breeding with a streaked Hemerocallis 'Hyperion', Virginia's Walter and Sybil Przypek hit the jackpot with this stunning, variegated daylily that is sure to be high on collectors' lists. The leaves of H. 'Secured Borders' emerge in spring with a narrow green center surrounded on both sides with wide white borders. The small, 12" tall x 18" wide clumps make a stunning statement in the spring garden. As the weather warms, the variegation gradually disappears and the leaves turn green. The clumps are topped with short stalks of yellow flowers in early summer. The quantities are limited, so don't miss this opportunity. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05626

Hemerocallis 'Toy Trumpets' (B. Sobek)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 3-9 36" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
When I first saw this Bob Sobek hybrid in the garden of Marty Schaefer and Jan Sacks, I knew it was one I had to grow. The light airy nature and profusion of tall flower spikes have made Hemerocallis 'Toy Trumpets' one of our favorite daylilies for garden appeal. In mid-June, the clumps are topped with 3' tall stalks, bearing an abundance of small, 2.5" bright golden-yellow flowers. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02721

Hemiboea
|
Hemiboea subcapitata (Glossy False Sinningia)
Light Shade Zone: 6b-9, at least 12" tall Origin: China
We have been stunned by the performance of this little-known Chinese African violet relative. The 1' long, glossy, dark green leaves are borne on opposite sides of a 1' tall, fleshy green stem. The plant spreads rapidly via rhizomes growing just below the soil surface, forming a 5' wide patch in just 2 years. Although the incredible bold foliage is plenty reason to grow it, the clumps are topped in late September with clusters of up to 25, 2" tubular white flowers, spotted purple inside. Although we have only grown this in Zone 7b, we are already hearing reports of hardiness in Zone 6...amazing! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07180

Hepatica

Hepatica acutiloba (Sharp-lobed Liverleaf)
Part Sun to Shade Zone: 4-9 4" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only!
Finally, we have enough to offer of this great native woodlander that can be found from Canada south to Georgia. This 4" tall x 8" wide clumper has thick clover-shaped foliage, appearing similar to a cutleaf asarum. The foliage on many clones is attractively mottled with muted silver patterns. In hot, dry summer, the foliage may go dormant in mid-to-late summer. Hepatica acutiloba prefers a well-drained to dry woodland site. The tiny flowers, which range from white to blue appear on 6" stalks in early spring...extremely cute! Our offerings are nursery propagated from seed which takes about as long as waiting for Paris Hilton to make an intelligent statement...okay, maybe not quite that long. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01847

Herbertia
|
Herbertia lahue ssp. lahue (Herbert's Iris)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-10 2" tall Origin: Argentina, Chile
Open House/Web-Only!
If you have a rock garden or a small space that you can observe from up close, then you need a hardy herbertia. This easy-to-grow and most amazing iris relative makes a miniature clump of narrow foliage to only 2" tall. The plants are topped for us from early-to-mid May with exquisite, dark blue-lavender flowers. Each flower is composed of three large, oblong petals surrounding a contrasting white eye etched in blue...simply marvelous! For those in the arctic zones north of Zone 7, plant your herbertia in a container garden or trough. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04495

Herniaria
|
Herniaria glabra 'Sea Foam' PPAF (Striped Rupturewort)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 5-8 1" tall Origin: E. Asia
Open House/Web-Only!
Since thyme is quite limited in our climate, we were thrilled to find a wonderful ornamental thyme substitute. Okay, it has no fragrance or culinary value, but H. glabra 'Sea Foam' looks to all the world like a variegated thyme. The tiny green leaves are edged in creamy white...very cute! The ground-hugging mat makes a slowly spreading patch to 1' wide in two years. If that's not enough, rupturewort is great for urinary problems, since it increases urea and sodium emission without increasing urine flow. Aren't you going to be the popular one in the neighborhood? Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07143

Hesperaloe
|
Hesperaloe funifera (False Yucca)
Sun Zone: 7-10, at least 72" tall Origin: USA, Mexico    alternate image
Open House/Web-Only!
This hard-to-find but easy-to-grow native false yucca species hails from northern Mexico and just across the border into southern Texas. The thick, green, non-spiny, sword-like leaves, which are badly in need of a shave, can reach 6' tall and form an architectural 6' tall x 6' wide clump. In late spring and continuing through the summer, the durable, drought-tolerant clumps are topped with 8-12' tall open flower spikes holding very interesting creamy white flowers. Hesperaloe funifera is a slow-growing plant that will never make you go "wow," but a nice mass of these will tell all the world that they are in the garden of a serious plant nerd. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01740

Hesperaloe parviflora (False Red Yucca)
Sun Zone: 5-9, at least 18" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only!
This is one of the little-known native gems from the Southwest US that is completely adaptable to most of the moist eastern US as well. Hesperaloe resembles a yucca but is a little more socially acceptable (safer around kids and bending gardeners) because it was born sans spines. The thick upright-growing, blue-green foliage makes a nice clump, especially from May through July, when it is topped with 40" spikes of rich salmon-pink flowers in late summer...a truly wonderful plant, especially in mass plantings. While hesperaloe is very easy to grow, it will perform much better in very dry soils. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00917
