Echinacea (Coneflower)
The resurgence in the popularity of this genus of US natives has strangely coincided both with the study into their use as part of the edible landscape...of course, for medicinal purposes only, and their ability to be reproduced clonally via tissue culture. We value them as great plants for late spring and summer interest in the natural garden as well as the mixed perennial border. As a group, these are quite easy-to-grow as well as being very heat- and drought-tolerant. We hope you are as excited as we are about the new hybrids that greatly extend the range of colors and forms.

Sun to Part Sun Zone: 4-9 40" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
This new coneflower from Richard Saul (named after his son) arises in spring as a basal rosette of narrow green leaves from which rise sturdy 40" tall stems. Starting in June, the flowering stems are topped with 3.5" bright orange flowers that have a delightfully sweet aroma. This F3 hybrid of E. purpurea and E. paradoxa (lots of good inbreeding...popular down there in the Georgia mountains) makes a fast-growing clump which, under good conditions, will produce 60 flowers on a 1-year-old clump...simply delightful. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06644

'Katie Saul' forms a clump of 3' tall, dark stems, each topped starting in mid-summer with 5" wide unique colored flowers that are peach toward the tips but change to cherry red near the central cone. Echinacea 'Mango Meadowbrite' PP 16,636 (Mango Meadowbrite Coneflower)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 5-8 30" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
(syn: E. CBG Cone3) This dazzling coneflower from the breakthrough breeding work of Dr. Jim Ault of the Chicago Botanic Garden created yet another color in echinaceas. E. 'Mango Meadowbrite' is topped with 3" wide, mango-colored (RHS 21A), fragrant flower heads surrounding a slightly darker orange central cone. Actually, the color is closer to orange-mustard, but that doesn't sound quite as appealing. This is a stunning plant in flower that is sure to stand out in the garden. It was named E. 'CBG Cone3', which is an invalid cultivar name, so we renamed it E. 'Mango Meadowbrite'. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05881
|
Echinacea 'Matthew Saul' PP 17,652 (Harvest Moon Coneflower)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 4-9 30" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
This new coneflower from Georgia's Saul Brothers is topped starting in July with lovely, 4" wide, peachy orange flowers surrounding an orange central cone atop 30" tall stems. E. 'Matthew Saul' is a delightful new color break in the genus, not to mention lightly fragrant. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07463
|
Echinacea 'Paranoia' PP 16,587 (Paranoid Coneflower)
Sun Zone: 5-8 10" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
You've grown to expect something different from Plant Delights, so here it is after 8 years of trials. Richard Saul of Itsaul Plants in Georgia made some echinacea crosses in the mid-'90s (E. paradoxa x purpurea) and passed along seed to us. We selected E. 'Paranoia' as the star, due to its compact 10" tall x 1' wide growth habit, and lovely rigid yellow flowers. This is a huge breakthrough in echinaceas that foreshadows more exciting introductions. So far, it has proven to be completely sterile, so don't look for any seedlings. Doesn't everyone need a little paranoia in their garden? Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05355

Echinacea 'Pixie Meadowbrite' PP 18,546 (Pixie Meadowbrite Coneflower)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 4-9 18" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
(syn: E. 'CBG Cone 2') Echinacea 'Pixie Meadowbrite' is the third release from Dr. Jim Ault's breeding program at the Chicago Botanic Garden. This new coneflower is the result of an intentional horticultural menage-a-trois with Echinacea purpurea, tennesseensis, and angustifolia. The result is a charming 18" tall x 2' wide compact clump, composed of sturdy flowering stems that end in mid-sized, flat-petaled pink flowers that rebloom all summer...a real winner! Since it was given the illegitimate name of CBG Cone 2, we have renamed it using their illegal trademark name of E. 'Pixie Meadowbrite' as the cultivar name. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07574

Echinacea purpurea 'Fragrant Angel' PP 16,054, PVR (Fragrant Angel Coneflower)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 3-9 36" tall Origin: USA
This sturdy new coneflower from Terra Nova Nurseries is the white counterpart of E. 'Ruby Giant' and the best white coneflower we have ever grown. The giant 4-5" heads of pure white petals, around a contrasting orange cone, are also deliciously fragrant. Since these are clonally reproduced, each plant is identical for a more uniform planting. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05643

Echinacea purpurea 'Green Envy' PPAF (Green Envy Coneflower)
Sun Zone: 4-9 20" tall Origin: USA
When Mark Veeder first showed me a photo of his new Echinacea purpurea seedling, I thought for sure this was an April Fool's Photoshop TM creation. Only after growing and photographing the plant myself, can I say for sure, it is truly this unique. The 20" tall stems are topped, starting in mid-June, with large 4.5" wide flowers composed of a dark cone with a green center. Surrounding the cone are long petals that are pink toward the cone changing to lime-green toward the downward recurving tips. E. 'Green Envy' is so weird, gardeners will either love or hate it...we love it! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08240

Echinacea purpurea 'Kim's Knee High' PP 12,242 (Kim's Knee High Dwarf Purple Coneflower)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 3-9 24" tall Origin: USA
From Tony's college classmate Kim Hawks, former owner of Niche Gardens, comes a new dwarf selection of the wonderful native purple coneflower. This compact selection is the first coneflower to be vegetatively propagated, ensuring that every plant is identical...no seed-grown variation as long as you remove the old seed heads. Starting in mid-June (NC), each flower head has rigidly reflexed, rosy-pink petals that give a truly unique look to this selection. Purple coneflower is extremely drought-tolerant, although it does favor improved garden conditions. Plant a drift, sit back with drink in hand, and wait for the butterflies! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03468

Echinacea purpurea 'Pink Double Delight' PP 18,803 (Double Pink Delight Coneflower)
Sun Zone: 3-9 24" tall Origin: USA
Echinacea 'Pink Double Delight', the latest in echinacea improvements, has impressed us with its excellent performance in our trials. Developed by Arie Blom of the Netherlands, this vigorous cultivar is composed of sturdy 24" tall stems, each topped with double flowers starting in July and continuing until frost. Each flower head is composed of an oversized, dark pink cone adorned with lighter pink petals. E. 'Pink Double Delight' needs 8+ hours of full sun to prevent the maturing flowers from doing a Greg Louganis half gainer. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07202

Echinacea purpurea 'Pink Poodle' PPAF (Pink Poodle Coneflower)
Sun Zone: 4-9 36" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Echinacea 'Pink Poodle' from the Terra Nova breeding program is the latest in the line of double-flowered pink coneflowers. E. 'Pink Poodle' boasts rounded double pink flowers that look like one of those overly clipped poodle tails, atop well-branched, sturdy 3' tall stems in the summer months...at least they've bred out that incessant yapping from its namesake. For some real fun in the garden, a little pink dye is all it takes to have your pet color coordinated with your coneflowers. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08513

Echinacea purpurea 'Ruby Giant' (Ruby Giant Purple Coneflower)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 3-9 36" tall Origin: USA
This Dan Heims selection of the US native Echinacea purpurea is from the European garden of the son of Magnus Nielson (Echinacea 'Magnus'). This clump was selected from the parent stock for the seed strain E. 'Rubinsturn'. One particularly nice plant was selected for vegetative propagation...all offspring are now identical. E. 'Ruby Giant' boasts large 5-7" wide flowers of pure bright clear pink, each with upcurved petal tips. Did I mention the flowers are delightfully fragrant? This is truly a stunning selection that is a must for every border! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04544

Echinacea 'Tomato Soup' PPAF (Tomato Soup Coneflower)
Sun Zone: 4-9 32" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
This new echinacea from Terra Nova indeed stretches what we used to think about echinaceas to an entirely new level. The 32" tall clumps are topped in summer with large 5" flowers, whose petals indeed look like the color of mama's tomato soup. It's a shame the late Christopher Lloyd isn't still around to create some of his renowned, stirring combinations with this wild and gaudy color. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08550

Edgeworthia

Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Snow Cream' (Giant Leaf Paper Plant)
Part Sun to Shade Zone: 7b-10, colder with protection 72" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only!
This stunning member of the daphne family is one of our most prized plants in the garden. All summer, the 6' tall x 6' wide umbrella-shaped clump, supported by a smooth brown trunk, is adorned with plumeria-like leaves. The foliage drops in mid-December to reveal both the wonderful bark and the large silvery flower buds. The flower buds open steadily from mid-January to early April, producing an overwhelmingly fragrant display of pendent golden yellow flowers. E. chrysantha is much more winter hardy (below 0 degrees F) than E. papyrifera, and much easier to grow. We have finally named the clone we selected for large foliage and flowers and have sold without a cultivar name for the last decade. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02246

Open House/Web-Only!
(aka: Herbertia euryandra, Alophia euryandra) If you wait until you can pronounce it, you'll miss out on a chance to try this delightful gem for the rock garden. This fascinating little irid that we first saw growing along the road in northern Argentina has proven to be one of the most prolific flowering small bulbs in our garden. The small, pleated, iris-like light green leaves compose the 15" wide clump, adorned with 1' tall spikes ending in terminal clusters of 1" blue-lavender flowers, starting in May and continuing through the summer. Ennealophus thrives best in a partially sunny, well-drained location. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05417

Ensete
|
Ensete maurelii (Red Abyssinian Banana)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 8-10 120" tall Origin: E. Africa
We have long been amazed at this superb dwarf ornamental banana from the high mountains of East Africa, and we are thrilled to be able to finally share. Growing to only 10' tall in temperate climates (20' tall in tropical areas), Ensete maurelii makes a superb ornamental for the summer border. Each leaf can reach gigantic proportions of 10' long. The most ornamental characteristic is that the foliage is flushed with burgundy-red, especially concentrated as the new growth emerges. The higher the light levels, the stronger the coloration. We have also seen this used in large summer containers with great effect. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #04790
