Hedychium (Hardy Ginger Lily)
These wonderful pass-along plants are finally available in many new varieties...all have proven to be reliably hardy in our Zone 7b garden (0 degrees F in winter). Gingers are prized for their late summer and early fall floral shows atop the tall bold-foliaged stalks. Many of the gingers are especially valued for the wonderful flower fragrance...a sweet honeysuckle scent and a favorite of hummingbirds! Gingers prefer bright to part sun in rich, moist garden soil, and they have a true love of growing on moist slopes. North of Zone 8, do not plant gingers after late August for best winter survivability.

Hedychium 'Carnival' has been one of our favorite ginger lily hybrids. This 4' tall and slow-multiplying selection with brightly red-marked stalks begins flowering for us in late summer and early fall. Typically, H. coccineum var. aurantiacum has fairly small flowers in a large head. Our form has large flowers in a large head. Like the species, the 6-7' tall clumps come into flower with a giant bang in early September, looking like a series of giant torches. This is the real attention-getter in late summer and fall as the rich, honeysuckle-like fragrance pervades the evening air from the 2", butterfly-like white flowers. The stalks emerge from a thick, slowly growing rhizome and grow through the spring and summer. In late summer, the pinecone-like buds form atop the stems. This 1992 Gainesville Tree Farm introduction (probably H. flavescens x gardnerianum) is one of the longest-flowering of the ginger lilies, starting here in late July or early August, and continuing until frost. The 4'+ tall stalks are topped with scrumptious, golden-yellow flowers with a dark gold throat. In early evening, the air is perfumed with their strong honeysuckle-like fragrance. This delightful dwarf ginger lily was discovered in Nepal by the UK's Tony Schilling, who named his new find after his son. H. 'Stephen' is perfect for the small garden where space is a consideration. Not only does 'Stephen' top out around 3', but the narrow foliage makes for a rather svelte specimen. Hedychium 'Stephen' is topped with slender flower heads of fragrant, butterscotch-yellow flowers each highlighted by contrasting orange anthers. For us, Hedychium 'Stephen' starts flowering in late July and repeats until late September...just darling.

We have grown this little-known ginger for several years, and it has quickly become one of our favorites. The strong 6' tall stalks are topped in late summer with stunning 1' tall flowers heads of large, butterscotch-orange, fragrant flowers. The flower color is quite unique among the gingers that we grow, and a plant in full flower is a crowd stopper. You are probably wondering what a Kin Ogi is? Year in and year out, the most spectacular ginger in our garden is still an old hybrid from India, H. 'Pradhanii'. A mature clump of this vigorous grower is composed of dozens of 7' tall stalks, each topped with large spikes of light peach-colored flowers from late summer until frost. The throat of each flower is peach-colored, changing to yellow near the end of the petals...a light honeysuckle fragrance is included at no extra charge! We are pleased to finally offer Hedychium 'Vanilla Ice', a selection from H. 'Dr. Moy' from NC's Mark and Louisa Messenbrink that was introduced in limited numbers around the year 2000. H. 'Vanilla Ice' has much more white flecking than its parent, which reduces it in both size and vigor...a good thing for smaller gardens. The rare, reverted, larger growing, less variegated shoot should be promptly removed. Helianthus (Sunflower)
These widespread natives to North and South America are primarily summer- and fall-flowering perennials (and annuals), often referred to by designers as ADYCs (another damn yellow composite).Helianthus are native from prairies to swamps and are renowned for their durability and adaptability. Almost without exception, the flowers are yellow-flowered daisies.

You are sure to love this Keith Hammett (of New Zealand) selection of our US native Helianthus angustifolius. Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' is our favorite selection of the naturally-occurring midwestern US hybrid of H. pauciflorus var. subrhomboideus x Helianthus tuberosus. In spring, H. 'Lemon Queen' begins its climb to the skies, and only stops when it reaches heights between 6' and 8' feet tall. In our garden, the sturdy stems are covered with 2", soft lemon-yellow flowers in July and August. This clumping back-of-the-border sunflower is tolerant of both moist or very dry soils. You can bet this common name wasn't coined by a Wall Street marketing firm. Helicodicerus, an easy-to-grow first cousin to the famed aroid Dracunculus vulgaris, grows on the rocky coastal cliffs on the Mediterranean Islands of Corsica, Sardinia, and the Balearics. The offsetting tubers give rise to the 1' tall green duck-foot-shaped three-dimensional foliage, which emerges in very early spring. Later in spring, the spectacular tan and purple speckled bud emerges from among the foliage, then opens parallel to the ground as a large flesh colored spathe highlighted by purple tails (spadix) emerging from the "crack." The open flower resembles the back side of a flatulent pig ... in image and in fragrance. If you grow this, it's best not to mention it on your E-Harmony profile.
