This new introduction from Olga Petryszyn makes a fast-growing, 3' wide mound of corrugated foliage, brilliant gold in spring, changing to a chartreuse color by summer. This Plant Delights hybrid has a sordid background involving Hosta longissima, 'Swoosh', 'Red Neck Heaven', and 'Elvis Lives'. That strange combination of genes produced a 1' tall x 30" wide clump of long, tapering, undulating blue-green leaves, bordered with stripes of yellow...reminiscent of the rapids in its namesake movie. Named after the late Diana, Princess of Wales, I have wanted to offer this hosta since I first acquired it in 1998. Having grown quite a few hostas over the years, I put this near the top of the "best-ever" list. This vigorous Hosta plantaginea hybrid makes a stunning, 3' wide clump of shiny, blue-green leaves with a very wide, creamy yellow border. Our new introduction is the answer to those who have "axed" (little Southern lingo) for better small hostas. This hybrid of Hosta 'Masquerade' x Hosta 'Invincible' boasts small, thick, glossy green foliage surrounded by a nice creamy white margin. As the plant matures, the white edges become even wider as the season progresses. The edge color is also quite unusual, in that it has tiny green flecks inside the white. We are pleased to introduce Hosta 'Dixie Chickadee', a reverse sport of our introduction Hosta 'Dixie Chick' (H. 'Masquerade' x H. 'Invincible'). H. 'Dixie Chickadee' is a very unusual plant in that the thick, waxy leaves are creamy yellow, edged in dark green, and peppered with green flecks...a most unique pattern in hostas. (aka: H. 97-69) Hosta 'Dixie Cups' is a 2010 PDN introduction and one of my personal favorites. Our 1997 cross of H. 'Korean Snow' x H. 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd' forms a 15" tall x 2' wide clump of large, upright, shiny glaucous corrugated leaves. The clump is topped with 28" stalks of tightly stacked purple flowers in September. This selection has not been tissue cultured, so supplies are limited.

(aka: H. 95-415) This is one of our more unique hosta introductions, a complex cross involving H. 'Elvis Lives', H. 'Red Neck Heaven', and a few other friends. Hosta 'Electrocution' makes a 14" tall x 28" wide clump of long, narrow, severely twisted leaves which are medium green with a nice yellow border that ages to white. The clump truly looks like it was letting out a final scream while strapped to an electric chair when the switch was pulled. This wonderful new hosta is one of the best sports to be discovered from Hosta 'Halcyon'...the reverse pattern of Hosta 'June'. This Patricia Scolnik discovery adds a nice creamy-yellow margin to the attractive blue leaves of the parent. The result is a 3' wide clump of blue leaves with a 1/2" border of creamy yellow that ages to white by season's end. The clumps are topped with 2' tall scapes of light lavender flowers in midsummer. This 1998 cross of Hosta venusta x Hosta 'Dorset Blue' resulted in one of our all-time favorite selections that we christened Hosta 'Gemstone'. Hosta 'Gemstone' makes a vigorous-growing but small, 5" tall x 1' wide clump of narrow Hosta venusta-like, blue leaves. In midsummer, the clumps are topped with short 10" spikes of lavender flowers. (aka: Hosta 95-163) This 1995 cross involved Hosta 'Elvis Lives' and Hosta yingeri 'Treasure Island', resulting in a glossy green, wavy leaf hosta with an amazing floral display. The very shiny leaves form a medium-sized 12" tall x 27" wide clump, topped in June and July with sturdy 30" spikes of spider-like medium lavender flowers. The flowers are actually attractive and because of their sheer number, they continue to open for nearly 6 weeks. Even visitors who didn't like hostas (yes, there are a few) were entranced by the floral display.

We have watched this Bob Solberg introduction for years, waiting not-so-patiently for it to finally become available. Hosta 'Ginsu Knife' (Hosta 'Iron Gate Supreme' x Hosta 'Green Fountain') is one of the most unique and recognizable hosta introductions in recent memory. This delightful gold-leaved hosta makes a 18" tall x 3' wide clump (the size is incorrect in Hosta registry) of round, cupped, leathery, golden foliage with a unique twisty point to the leaves. The heavily-waxed leaves give a white appearance to the back of the foliage. Although the leaves emerge chartreuse green, they brighten to a brilliant golden yellow that holds until frost.
