Cypripedium (Lady Slipper Orchid)
Certainly, these terrestrial orchids are among the most desired of all woodland garden plants, despite their often finicky requirements. We are pleased to offer an increasing selection of nursery-propagated species and hybrids (more on-line). Please understand that an average of 7 years is required to grow these from seed in vitro, therefore the price will never compete with that of wild-collected plants. When planted, the roots should lay horizontally, just below the soil surface. We are excited to be able to offer some of the very rare and wonderful Frosch hybrids from Germany. While we have chosen the easiest of the species and the most vigorous of hybrids, lady slipper orchids are not plants for beginning gardeners.

Cypripedium 'Hank Small' <a class=reg href='http://www.cypripedium.de' target='frosch'> Frosch ®</a> (Hank Small Ladyslipper Orchid)

Cypripedium 'Hank Small' Frosch ® (Hank Small Ladyslipper Orchid)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 4-7 18" tall Origin: Hybrid
This 1991 Carson Whitlow hybrid is the result of a pre-arranged rendezvous between the US native Cypripedium parviflorum var. parviflorum and the Chinese Cypripedium henryi. This easy-to-grow selection produces 18" tall stalks, topped in mid-spring with a rich, deep yellow pouch, backed by long, twisted cinnamon sepals for a stunning contrast. Our offerings of C. 'Hank Small' are all flowering-sized plants. I couldn't figure how an orchid was named for a one-year Atlanta Braves baseball player, when Carson shared that the hybrid is actually named for its parents. Hank is a common name for one parent C. henryi, and C. parviflorum means "small"...very cute. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07505

Atop the 16" stalk of this mid-season bloomer, enjoy a long-lasting creamy pouch about the size of a small egg, highlighted by amber-purple handlebar-moustache like sepals. C. 'Inge' is fast to form a nice clump. Our offerings are flowering-sized seed grown plants. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08529

Cypripedium parviflorum var. parviflorum (Southern Yellow Ladyslipper Orchid)

Cypripedium parviflorum var. parviflorum (Southern Yellow Ladyslipper Orchid)

Light ShadeZone: 4-7 15" tall Origin: USA
(aka: C. calceolus var. parviflorum) This native ladyslipper has been virtually unavailable from propagated stock until recently. We are pleased to be able to offer a limited number of seed grown, flowering-sized plants of this midwest/east coast woodland native. In very late spring, the 1' tall upright stems emerge, clothed with large fuzzy leaves. As they finish unfurling, you will find them topped with an exquisite, bright yellow, pouch-like flower, backed with long mahogany sepals. Once established, the clumps will develop into multiple stemmed prizes worthy of including in your will. In the wild, these prefer moist, but well-drained sites... spread the roots out horizontally and plant shallow... only for advanced gardeners! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02726

Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens (Yellow Lady Slipper Orchid)

Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens (Yellow Lady Slipper Orchid)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 3-8a 20" tall Origin: USA
(syn: C. calceolus var. pubescens) We are thrilled to be able to once again offer the wonderful giant yellow ladyslipper orchid. This easy-to-grow native makes a large clump (with age) of 20" tall stalks, clothed with hairy green leaves. In May, the clumps are topped with amazing bright yellow "ladyslipper" flowers. An established clump of C. pubescens is truly a breathtaking sight! Cypripediums should be planted in compost amended soil, where the roots can be spread out horizontally on top of the soil, then covered in compost, since the roots do not grow into the soil like most plants. Our flowering-sized plants are nursery-propagated from seed. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04341

Cypripedium reginae (Showy Lady Slipper Orchid)

Cypripedium reginae (Showy Lady Slipper Orchid)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 2-7a 18" tall Origin: USA
The showy lady slipper is one of the most abundant northeast US species. In June, the plants emerge with 18'' tall stalks, each clothed in oblong velvety leaves. From mid-June to July, the stems are topped with exquisite slipper flowers...white petals at the top with a pink slipper attached below. In time, C. reginae will develop into quite a large clump. C. reginae prefers a partially open site with a moist, neutral, or slightly acid soil. C. reginae and other lady slippers are not plants for beginning gardeners. These are all seed-grown, nursery-propagated plants. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03897

Cypripedium reginae 'Alba' (White Showy Ladyslipper Orchid)

Cypripedium reginae 'Alba' (White Showy Ladyslipper Orchid)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 2-7a 18" tall Origin: USA
We are pleased to offer the very rare white flowered form of the treasured US native, Cypripedium reginae 'Alba'. These are flowering-sized nursery-propagated from seed as a cultivar strain, so each plant is a unique clone. Cypripedium reginae is one of the latest species to emerge in spring, but when it does, the 18" tall stems are topped with white pocketbook-like flowers in late June or early July depending on your climate. C. reginae prefers a partially open site with a moist, neutral, or slightly acid soil. C. reginae should only be grown by experienced gardeners as the cost of failure is too high for novices. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08548

Cypripedium 'Sebastian' <a class=reg href='http://www.cypripedium.de' target='frosch'> Frosch ®</a> (Sebastian Ladyslipper Orchid)

Cypripedium 'Sebastian' Frosch ® (Sebastian Ladyslipper Orchid)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 4-7a, at least 23" tall Origin: Hybrid
This 1998 Werner Frosch hybrid, named for cypripedium grower Sebastian Urban, combines the genes of the east coast Cypripedium parviflorum v. parviflorum with the northwest US native C. montanum. This long distance romance resulted in vigorous 23" tall plants that produce narrow flowering stems topped with white pocketbook-shaped flowers, backed by prominent twisted red-burgundy sepals. The C. montanum parent passed along both a slight fragrance as well as the multiple flower per stalk trait. These flowering-sized plants are in very limited supply. As with all cypripediums, they should only be attempted by experienced growers. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08530

Cypripedium 'Ulla Silkens' <a class=reg href='http://www.cypripedium.de' target='frosch'> Frosch ®</a> (Ulla Silkens Ladyslipper Orchid)

Cypripedium 'Ulla Silkens' Frosch ® (Ulla Silkens Ladyslipper Orchid)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 3-7 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
Cypripedium 'Ulla Silkens' is a stunning 1996 hybrid from Svante Malmgren. This vigorous hybrid strain is a cross of the American C. reginae x the rare Chinese C. flavum. C. 'Ulla Silkens' is much easier to grow than its parents and will take a good bit of sun in cooler climates, but still prefers moist alkaline soils. The 2' tall flowering stalks that appear in mid- to late-June are topped with huge slippers of burgundy and white, backed by three large pure white sepals. The clumps will become quite large with nearly 100 flowers per clump. Our offerings are flowering-sized plants grown from seed. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07479

Cypripedium x ventricosum <a class=reg href='http://www.cypripedium.de' target='frosch'> Frosch ®</a> (Siberian Hybrid Hardy Lady Slipper)

Cypripedium x ventricosum Frosch ® (Siberian Hybrid Hardy Lady Slipper)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 4-7a, at least 12" tall Origin: China, Siberia    alternate image
This rare orchid hails from that favorite vacation spot of Russian dissidents, Siberia. C. x ventricosum was long thought to be a new species, until research showed it to be a natural hybrid of Cypripedium calceolus and C. macranthos...I guess anything goes when the nights get cold and lonely. The slippers range from lavender to brownish, depending on which parent contributed the most genes, and the same goes for the 3 sepals...purple to brown striped. Remember all hybrid cypripediums are seedlings and therefore each is unique. Moist, but well-drained, cool sites offer the best chance for success. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08075

Cyrtomium (Holly Fern)
The group of holly ferns are known for their bold tropical appearance, which is in stark contrast to the soft-textured nature of most typical ferns. These tough and durable ferns that tolerate the worst of light and drought conditions make great additions to the low-maintenance woodland garden. We are pleased to offer an extensive listing of the most hardy forms of this great fern genus.
Cyrtomium caryotideum (Holly Fern)

Cyrtomium caryotideum (Holly Fern)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 6-10 24" tall Origin: China, Japan
Open House/Web-Only! This Asian fern looks completely different from C. falcatum. The olive drab foliage consists of very large pinnae (leaflets to the taxonomically disabled), which are attached five or so to each side of the stem (rachis to you enlightened folks). The end leaflet on each stem has a cool three-lobed look... sort of like an Amur maple. Each clump of this evergreen fern will eventually make a lovely 3' wide mound. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02421
$12.00

Cyrtomium falcatum 'Butterfieldii' (Butterfield's Holly Fern)

Cyrtomium falcatum 'Butterfieldii' (Butterfield's Holly Fern)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 7-10, at least 18" tall Origin: China
We are pleased to offer this rare selection of the tough-as-nails Cyrtomium falcatum. The 18" long, glossy, dark evergreen fronds of C. 'Butterfieldii' are easily recognizable by their very serrate, deeply-toothed leaf margins. Each 18" tall x 2' wide clump has a truly unique appearance thanks to the serrate foliage...a great specimen fern. Thanks to pteridomaniac Judith Jones for sharing spores. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06954

Cyrtomium falcatum var. maritimum 'Eco Jade' (Dwarf Holly Fern)

Cyrtomium falcatum var. maritimum 'Eco Jade' (Dwarf Holly Fern)

Light ShadeZone: 7-8, at least 6" tall Origin: Korea
Open House/Web-Only! We believe this Don Jacobs selection is no different from the C. falcatum var. maritimum that was sold without the cultivar name. In case we are wrong, we are selling this under the name which we acquired it. We are pretty certain it is actually a dwarf form of C. falcatum, probably the one collected by Barry Yinger from Paeknyong Island, Korea. Whatever you call it, this choice fern for the woodland rock garden makes a small clump, eventually reaching 6" tall x 15" wide. The very thick, glossy green leaves make this an eye-catching specimen. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05250
