Back in the English Victorian era, collectors named several hundred crested varieties of Hart's-tongue, but only a few remain. A. scolopendrium 'Cristata' is a selection of the European form of this species that makes a tight rosette of shiny green tongue-like leaves, each ending in a petticoat crest.
