Zantedeschia (Calla Lily)
We are pleased to make available some of the lesser-known Zantedeschia aethiopica cultivars, which are hardy and make superb garden plants. These are very different in growth habit from their more colorful flowered cousins, which are derived from distantly related species. Z. aethiopica adds a tropical appearance to the garden with an ironclad constitution...even down to temperatures below 0 degrees F. Although they thrive best in moist, rich sites, callas are amazingly durable under less than ideal conditions. We think you will really enjoy some of the selections we have chosen to include. |
Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Hercules' (Hercules Calla Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10 48" tall Origin: S. Africa
This introduction from California's famed Western Hills Nursery forms upright clumps composed of large hastate white-spotted leaves that, for us, reach 3'+ tall when mature. We have not found this to grow as large as Z. 'White Giant'. In late spring, the clumps are topped with 4' tall spikes ending in a large white chalice. Our plants are from the clone that has been grown for years at Strybing Arboretum. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07781

Zantedeschia aethiopica 'White Giant' (White Giant Calla Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-10 72" tall Origin: S. Africa
We first saw this giant calla at the California garden of plantsman/garden writer Sonny Garcia and were literally blown away. Lining the walkway were these giant, green and white speckled-leaved Z. aethiopica callas, whose foliage topped out at waist high. Even more amazing were the 6' tall flower stems towering above my head. The flower is the classic, large, creamy-white cup typical of the species...except this selection has been doing some really good steroids. In our garden, we have only been able to muster 4' tall foliage and 5.5' tall flower spikes, but that's still not bad. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03695

Zantedeschia 'Edge of Night' PP 14,926 (Edge of Night Calla Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-9, at least 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
(aka: Z. 'Black Star') This fabulous new zantedeschia was discovered as a mutation on Z. 'Schwarzwalder' by Frank Patterson in West Linn, Oregon. The green leaves are highlighted by small, white spots and a unique, black-purple leaf edge. In July, the clumps are topped with dark, black-purple flowers...simply amazing and a great addition to the black garden. As with all hybrid zantedeschia, they do not emerge until mid-May, so be patient.
Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06321

Zantedeschia 'Picasso' PP 15,282 (Picasso Calla Lily)
Sun Zone: 7-10, at least 30" tall Origin: Hybrid
We just love this amazing breakthrough in calla lily breeding from Holland's Cecilius Jan-Jochem Randag. Zantedeschia 'Picasso' is a robust grower, forming a 30" tall x 18" wide clump of large white-spotted arrow-shaped leaves. The clump is topped, starting in late May (NC) and continuing well through the summer, with up to two dozen 30" spikes, each ending in a vaaaze-shaped inflorescence of purple with a wide white lip...almost too sexy for our garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08324

Zephyranthes (Rain Lily)
We are fascinated with the wonderful group of zephyranthes (rain lilies). Rain lilies are unobtrusive summer-flowering small bulbs that can fit in virtually any landscape. The flower range is from yellow to white to pink. The great thing about rain lilies is the lack of large foliage that accompanies many of the spring-flowering bulbs. There are rain lilies that grow in conditions from bogs to deserts, with most having an incredible tolerance to heat. We were pleased that our butterflies find these a wonderful nectar source in the summer months. We are very pleased to continue expanding our rain lily selection with many of the hard-to-find Mexican species, many older US hybrids, and the groundbreaking new work from Fadjar Marta of Indonesia. |
Zephyranthes 'Apricot Queen' (Rain Lily)
Sun Zone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
This fabulous Thad Howard hybrid of Z. 'Ruth Page' x Z. pulchella is one of the most unique rain lilies we grow. The glossy green foliage is topped, starting in late summer, with 6" tall spikes of 1.5" - 2" rounded flowers that open the first day as a lovely peachy apricot. The second day, the flowers change to a scrumptious peach sherbert orange. This reliable rain lily has quickly become one of our favorites. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05393

Zephyranthes 'Aquarius' (Aquarius Rain Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10, at least 8" tall Origin: Hybrid
This rapidly multiplying and floriferous rain lily is an E.L. Brasol hybrid, presumed to be a cross involving Z. candida and Z. citrina (actually Z. 'Ajax' probably backcrossed to Z. candida). After rain in summer and early fall, the 8" tall clumps are smothered with large creamy cups, highlighted by the yellow anthers. In our trials, Z. 'Aquarius' seems to be apomictic (comes true from seed). Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04565

Zephyranthes 'Bali Beauty' (Bali Beauty Rain Lily)
Sun Zone: 7b-10, at least 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
(aka: Z. FM #76) This very floriferous stunner from the rain lily breeding program of Indonesia's Fadjar Marta is a true breeding breakthrough. The flower buds atop the 6" stalks are yellow flushed with pink veins. Upon opening, the 3" wide bicolor flowers are lemon yellow with a dark pink edge...simply a sight to behold. For us, these begin flowering around mid-June...rain permitting. Quantities are limited. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06981

Zephyranthes 'Bangkok Yellow' (Bangkok Yellow Rain Lily)
Sun Zone: 7b-10 8" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
Our original bulb was purchased from the Bangkok market by plantsman Alan Galloway. We first thought it was the old hybrid Z. 'Ajax', but this clone differed slightly in color from the Z. 'Ajax' in our reference collection; hence, we use the moniker 'Bangkok Yellow'. This is almost certainly another hybrid of Z. citrina x Z. candida because of the typical short, round, upright green leaves of Z. candida. When it begins flowering in late summer, the clumps are topped with Z. candida-sized flowers that open a nice yellow and change to a lighter yellow the second day. It has performed very well in our garden trials. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05156
|
Zephyranthes 'Batik' (Batik Rain Lily)
Sun Zone: 7b-10, at least 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
(aka: Z. FM #65) This new rain lily from Indonesia's Fadjar Marta produces 6" stalks topped, starting in early July, with 2.5" apricot-colored flowers, highlighted by a yellow center. Each petal is highlighted with a suffuse yellow stripe down the center...quite nice! When summer showers are plentiful, we get good rebloom all summer...rain not included. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06980

Zephyranthes 'Big Dude' (Big Dude Rain Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-10 6" tall Origin: Mexico
Zephyranthes 'Big Dude' is one of our selections from the seed strain Z. 'Labuffarosea'. We were looking for a selection with large flowers and a fast-multiplying habit, and this is the result. Each flower can reach an amazing 4" in width. The large, white petals are tipped with a faint blush of pink on the tips. This easy-to-grow rain lily is amazing when the entire clump bursts into flower after a rain. For us, flowering starts in early summer and continues until frost. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04367

Zephyranthes candida (Rain Lily)
Sun to Light Shade Zone: 7-10 12" tall Origin: S. America
Open House/Web-Only!
This wonderful, semi-evergreen rain lily just can't be beaten for an easy-to-grow garden performer. The round, narrow, dark green foliage makes a thick clump. Beginning in summer, 1" tall, pure white, star-like flowers with dramatic golden stamens (pollen holders) arise just above the foliage. Z. candida makes a great specimen clump but, when used in a mass or for a border, it is simply indescribable! Although quite durable, Z. candida performs best in a rich or very moist site. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01183

Zephyranthes 'Confection' (Confection Rain Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-10 8" tall Origin: Mexico
Open House/Web-Only!
This new clone is a Yucca Do selection from the Z. 'Labuffarosea' seed strain. Z. 'Confection' boasts flowers that are so large the petals actually weep like the ears of a wet dog...without the accompanying smell. The center of each flower is pure white, changing to pink about halfway down the pendent petals...a very unique form. Flowering begins in midsummer and continues until frost...after each rain event. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05160

Zephyranthes 'Cookie Cutter Moon' (Cookie Cutter Moon Rain Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10, at least 8" tall Origin: Mexico
Open House/Web-Only!
This lovely rain lily was discovered by our friends at Yucca Do Nursery in 1996 in Tamaulipas, Mexico, growing near Z. clintae and Z. traubii. The small clumps of flat foliage are topped with solid white flowers starting in midsummer and continuing until early fall...rain permitting. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07378

Zephyranthes 'Copper Mine' (Copper Mine Rain Lily)
Sun Zone: 7b-10, at least 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
(aka: Z. FM #12) This vigorous rain lily from Indonesia's Fadjar Marta is topped, starting in mid-June, with clusters of 6" flower stalks, each topped with a 2" copper-orange (RHS 167C) flower highlighted with a bright yellow throat. The buds also show a nice rose flush on the outside of the petals. Z. 'Copper Mine' forms a very striking clump in the garden. Quantities are limited. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06976

Zephyranthes drummondii 'Fedora' (Fedora Rain Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-9, at least 8" tall Origin: Mexico
We discovered this huge flowering selection of Z. drummondii at 3,500' in the Sierra Chiquita mountains of Mexico in 1994. The flat, glaucous leaves produce huge, 2.5" wide diameter offsetting bulbs. For us, Z. drummondii 'Fedora' makes a 1' diameter clump, which begins flowering in late April to early May and reblooms well throughout late August as summer rains pass by. The large, 3", pure white, nocturnally-opening fragrant flowers atop 8" stalks are simply superb. Our offerings are divisions from our original bulb. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07075

Zephyranthes 'Fantasy Island' (Fantasy Island Rain Lily)
Sun Zone: 7b-10, at least 8" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
(aka: Z. FM #36) Have I used the adjective "amazing" too much? It's hard to find words to fit the work of Indonesia's Fadjar Marta, who was awarded the prestigious 2007 Herbert Medal from the International Bulb Society. Z. 'Fantasy Island' is topped, starting in late July, with large 3" wide flowers. Each white petal is edged in pink, creating a stunning new effect. It's just hard to get enough of these new rain lilies. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06978

Zephyranthes grandiflora (Large-Flowered Pink Rain Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10 10" tall Origin: Hybrid
(Often incorrectly listed as Z. rosea) This wonderful rain lily has 8" long, flat, glossy green foliage that quickly forms a nice 1' wide clump. All summer, the clump is topped with 12" tall stalks of giant, libido-awakening, 3"+ rose-pink flowers (RHS 75B). A clump can have up to 20 flowers open at once...absolutely spectacular. Z. grandiflora can be even more of a shocker when used in a mass planting...nothing demure or quaint here! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00368
|
Zephyranthes 'Grandjax' (Grandjax Rain Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10 8" tall Origin: Hybrid
Open House/Web-Only!
Z. 'Grandjax' is truly one of the great rain lily hybrids of all times. From Ray Flagg comes this cross of Z. grandiflora and the creamy hybrid Z. 'Ajax'. This fast-multiplying rain lily quickly makes a tight clump that is topped, from summer through early fall, with dozens (eventually hundreds) of large, creamy-pink flowers with white stars in the center...superb!!! Since this is a sterile hybrid, don't expect seedlings to pop up in your garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03184
