Unfortunately, the newer "flower show" hybrid daylilies have gone far from their origin. This native Chinese species is truly one of my garden favorites. In July, the clump of Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus by our deck puts out 3-4' bloom scapes topped with dozens of very fragrant, narrow-petaled, lemony-yellow flowers...that's right...fragrant! The flowers open in early evening and close early the following morning, making them perfect for those that like to enjoy their garden at night after a long day at the office or for insomniacs who tire of the Psychic Friends Network.
