Cremastra appendiculata (Appendiculate Cremastra Orchid) slide #62067

Cremastra appendiculata (Appendiculate Cremastra Orchid)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-9 12" tall Origin: China, Japan, Taiwan

Open House/Web-Only! This Asian terrestrial orchid has proven easy to grow as long as you give it humus-rich, moist well-drained organic soils. In appearance, it's like a giant version of our native cranefly orchid (Tipularia discolor). The 1' long x 2" wide green leaves emerge in the fall and remain until April when they being to go dormant as the flower spikes appear. The 1' tall flower spikes are topped in late April/early May (NC) with small mauvy lavender pendant tubular flowers...very cute, but certainly not what I'd call showy. To quote plantsman John Elsley, "For those who like this kind of thing, this is just the kind of thing they would like." Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
