Baptisia 'Purple Smoke' (Purple Smoke Redneck Lupine) slide #9649
NC Botanical Gdn, NC / R. Gardner

Baptisia 'Purple Smoke' (Purple Smoke Redneck Lupine)

Sun to Part SunZone: 3-9 50" tall Origin: USA Hybrid

This 1996 introduction by the late NC Botanical Garden curator Rob Gardner, was selected at the garden from rows of B. minor var. aberrans (not B. australis as is often printed) seedlings. Obviously, some unsafe plant sex had taken place with a wandering Baptisia alba. The result is an extremely vigorous, deer-resistant baptisia with charcoal-green stems (when mature) and dozens of giant lupine-like flower heads of dusty purple. You will grow to love this outstanding introduction more with each year as the clump matures...SUPERB! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
