This new species from Central Mexico, described in 2002, is named in honor of Mexican botanist Abisai Garcia-Mendoza. Agave garciae-mendozae is reportedly similar to Agave horrida ssp. perotensis, forming a dark green 2' wide rosette, adorned with small reddish spines.
