This is one of the most unique members of the fern family...a fern that climbs. The climbing fern has very lacy foliage resembling an arthritic hand, with the male fronds looking less frilly, contrasting with the lacy female foliage that bears the spores in late season. While Japanese climbing fern dies down each winter, the energy stored in the roots produces a taller climber each year. In the deep South, L. japonicum may become weedy by spreading spores around...be careful or avoid this plant in environmentally sensitive areas.
