Carex appalachica is a superb sedge, native from Quebec south to South Carolina, that's a must for shade gardeners. Naturally occurring in dry woodlands, even underneath hemlocks, Appalachian sedge is adaptable to almost all garden conditions...except swamps. The very narrow, weeping, mop-top looking, deer-resistant foliage makes an airy, 18" wide clump. When used singly or en masse, the textural contrast near bolder elements is simply stunning. If you've been looking for a shady replacement for an unmown lawn or a hairpiece that matches your green thumb, look no further.

Maintenance:

In late winter, we like to shear back the old foliage which often looks a bit tired after the winter. While it improves the garden appearance, it has no effect on the health of the plant either way.

Growing Conditions:

Average to dry soils are perfect, although it handles garden irrigation just fine. While it can be found in deep shade in the wild, it grows much better in open shade to a couple of hours of morning sun.

Garden Value:

The fine texture of these sedge species make a great design element in the garden, especially when used to contrast bolder, textured perennials. Mass plantings can be particularly effective foils.

Natural Impact:

Almost all sedges are great host plants for an array of beneficial insects.
