The 2018 Perennial Plant of the Year! We are pleased to have introduced this stunning Allium nutans hybrid in 2000, from breeder Mark McDonough (aka Mr. Onion). Allium 'Millenium' represents several generations of breeding onions and is head and shoulders above any other allium we grow. The compact 1' tall x 1' wide clump of narrow, glossy green, deer-resistant leaves is topped for more than a month in late summer with 2" rosy-purple flower heads, which attract flocks of onion-loving butterflies and bees. We grow this in several locations and have never seen any sign of a stray seedling...garliccimo! For the first few years, we used the spelling, Millennium, but Mark actually registered it as Millenium, so we've corrected our spelling.

Maintenance:

This charming ornamental onion needs very little maintenance. When it dies back in back come late fall, the old foliage can be removed, but that's about it. 'Millenium' blooms for months, producing a long succession of flowers, so those of us who strive for perfection will dead-head the spent flower stalks so the new ones can show their best. This superb cultivar is worthy of this modest amount of grooming.

Growing Conditions:

It prefers full sun, preferably more than 4-6 hours daily. Good drainage is preferred, although it is quite tolerant of bad siting, as long as it isn't planted in shade. It's also quite drought tolerant, so it's quite rare you'd need to supply supplemental moisture once it's established.

Natural Impact:

This special ornamental allium has virtually no pest problems in the garden. It is quite attractive to a number of pollinators mentioned above.
