(aka: Polypodium vulgare A1K-137) There are few fern introductions that excite us as much as our 2004 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of Polypodium vulgare. I had tried for years to grow the commonly sold European form of this species with no luck and had given up until I found this growing near the village of Nari on the Korean island of Ulleung (aka Uulong). From spores, we now have a stunning 6" tall x 30" wide evergreen patch in 15 years. The medium green leaves, which look as good in January as they do in June, form a thick patch above the slowly-spreading rhizomes. Polypodium vulgare 'Ulleung Island' is a fantastic deer-resistant, evergreen groundcover fern that needs to be grown in all woodland gardens.
