Zephyranthes 'Redneck Romance' is a 2005 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction. From our 1994 Northern Mexico botanical expedition, we returned with two rain lilies, Zephyranthes drummondii and Zephyranthes lindleyana. Since most rain lilies don't like each other enough to have sex, we figured we were safe planting them side by side. We figured wrong. I guess out here in the country even a rain lily gets lonely at night, and son-of-a-gun, did we get some babies. In effect, we recreated the naturally occurring Zephyranthes morrisclintii. The offspring are remarkably similar to each other, with the flat foliage of Zephyranthes drummondii topped with a light pink, cup-shaped flower from Zephyranthes lindleyana. The flowering season starts in April, making it one of the earliest rain lilies to flower. We don't want to have the parents neutered, but to keep from doing so, we need to find good homes for the offspring.
