Hymenocallis liriosme 'Chalmette' is a 2022 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a Victor Lambou collection of the gulf coast native Texas spider lily, from St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. Chalmette, as you may remember, is a suburb of New Orleans that was under 14' of water during Hurricane Katrina, so as you can imagine, this Hymenocallis has no problem with being submerged. For us, Hymenocallis liriosme 'Chalmette' flowers in mid-April, putting on an amazing show of 20" tall stalks of white-cupped flowers, which emerge alongside the strappy green leaves. Reasonably moist garden soils are fine, and plants even perform fine if the soils dry a bit in summer. Botanists who should know better, continue to synonymize this with the late summer-flowering, dryland species, Hymenocallis galvestonensis.
